I want a base... Just don't know if I want a classic )cobra 2000 dak mar x etc.) or new one )general SWJ, etc...) Out put power isn't all that important, I could allways use an amp. But I do like toys, and I do like the classic stuff too. If I were to buy (lets say) a 2000 I would not want it hacked up in any way (eg. extra channels) but I like my extra freqs... ARRRGH! What do you all think? BC |

You will need to make up your mind what you want it to do, am, fm, ssb and if you want extra frequencies. You will get many relpies to this question, I will offer my input after you choose what you want it to do then you can choose, always remember the best station for you is the one you chose as long as you like it. |

Airplane1 , BC910 ..... It would have been nice if some company had put out a CB radio with IF DSP and noise blanking together.... how come DSP has never caught on for CB sets? Today DSP can be built on a plug in modual ... Another gripe i have is the FCC with current technolgy not allowing mulit band radios with CB it would have been easy to preset the CB band. This would have resulted in one great Base radio...... |

How deep are your pockets and do you prefer SSB or AM? |

hey BC, how about using a ham rig? i know they are not great on AM, but if you got some audio processing gear to plug into the mic jack, (MFJ has a cool EQ/ compressor coming out soon) i'll bet you could sound pretty bodacious on the 'ol ancient mary! i myself am looking into getting a kenwood TS-430s. talk about bells and whistles compared to a CB! know that if you get an older classic base like the 2000gtl (my favorite!), that they are getting old, and will be requiring parts replacement periodically. to me this is an opportunity to put in a better part, and have some soldering fun. and remember how hard that old screwdriver bug bites when it comes to these old beasts. "if i only turn up this, and maybe this, and maybe..." unless you like galaxy stuff, there's not much out there on the new base market. the ones that are base versions of the new 2950DX look pretty decent. just some thoughts, matt |

"The best *base* station?". The best station will be the one with the best location, the best antennas/towers, and the best operator. Whatever the "radio" is...the "radio" itself is just an accessory. |

you already have 'em, bc-BOTH of 'em! the S9 & the ar2500 . if pseudo-CB counts. a ham rig is also a thought. i have 'em all, & still tend to use my ar3500 more then my ic735. i don't think ANY of the available CB or even rci/galaxy base stations can hold a candle to either the S9 or 3500. as for classics, they may LOOK & SOUND classic, but i don't think they'll hear as well as the 9/3500 or an HF rig. and, classic=$$ for repairs/refreshing. get 1 when you can, but something else needs to be available as well. an antenna switch so you can interchange 'em at will. once you are satisfied you have a radio that cannot be outheard, go with drake's suggestion. while i agree ANTENNAANTENNAANTENNA, i'm not sure what your neighborhood or his is like, but my maco v5/8 & 6 meter loop is about max for my locale. while a 3 element beam may not really take up any more physical space, it is a bit more obtrusive looking & would definitely get me more complaints of causing tvi-when i'm not even home . yes, it happens STILL, after being here for 20 years. then, you'll need to decide vert/hor or both, which blocks out more sunlight on the neighbors tomato patch. unless you locate a pdlII.... |

That's a tough question. As you said, you can always add your amp to whatever you get. As far as toys, you can always add those to the radio. I guess the main issue is how many frequencies you require, do you like the big face meter? Does it have really good ears? Is it know to be loud and clear and stable on SSB? I run a mobile which does great for me because my antenna system is what really gets it out (Imax at 125ft to the tip). The mobile I run is a Magnum Omega Force S45. I beleive it is the same inside as the S 9 but has many more features such as scan and memory, two mic connections and two meters. You know, based on what you have said, if I were you I'd take a serious look at the Magnum base station and figure out what bells and whistles I wanted and by them separate. I hear this radio has the same quality modulation and hears as the the other magnums. Magnums are simply good quality. This radio doesn't put out a lot of power but you mentioned an amp. The radio is really inexpensive for a base. Later, Mikefromms |

I have a very strong feeling that we might just see the coming back to life of some upper deck quality radio equipment from the factory of Mr. Sam Lewis. I'm not talking of the up coming 175 watt S-9s and like radios. Gosh guys it has to happen. The demand is there and someone will fill that demand with a real top quality legal CB base radio with both AM and sideband, I believe this just might happen within the next 5 or so years, but these radios will not be cheep. The likes of Tram, Browning, Uniden Madison and Cobra 2000-GTL, two other big names were Courier and Sonar. There has been many great legal CB base radios in the past, and the second coming is long past over due. Some of us well remember the base radios that would cover the whole desk top. Over the past 40 plus years I've had many of the names I've mentioned with the exception of the Tram and Uniden Madison. Just my thoughts and two cents. Carl CEF-357 |

Oh darn, forgot to mention another two monster base radios I didn't own, but had a couple of thoughts of buying the whole five or six piece all white CPI base radio. and the other was the Demco Super Satellite with several pieces to the whole base station system. I guess I should bring into thought the cream of the whole crop, but it was sideband only, By the late Donald Stoner. The Stoner Pro-40. Still to this day I would love to own one of his great radios, Mr. Stoner's that is, if nothing more than to be able to say I've owned the best of the best. Just another 2 cents worth. Carl CEF-357 |
