this is a continuation of another thread i started.

i am looking at buying an HF radio, and i would like to get one that uses tubes in the final amp section.
can anyone give me some opinions on what has aged well and what has turned out to be junk?
a general coverage receiver is a must.
i realize that this takes a lot of radios out of the running, and to be honest, im not sure that there even IS such a radio.
any and all help and opinions are appreciated,
matt

the ones i added to your other post are ones i've owned or still own. more then satisfactory results out of any on SSB, an AM have had better luck with icom 1st & then yaesu. did a lot more listening on my 757 then my 735, though both are good.
at this point, anything affordable is 20+ years old. the tube radios are approaching 30 for the last of 'em, & i'm not sure of any with general coverage receive. as for the operating condition on them, i know of a LOT of people who have purchased 101, 520 & siltronix from e*auction, with POOR results, at best. 1 guy paid $200 for a MINT 1011c that has loads of issues. he just gave me another MINT 1011c so maybe i can get enough MINT parts out of 'em to make 1 MINT 1011c. a brief look tells me he needs at least 3 more MINT 1011c's....

patzerozero.
I love working on and fixing tubes stuff and in fact I'd love to get an old Yaesu FT-400DX for the shack.

I could not fault my TS820S which i purchased off the site we can't mention......until that is...i turned it into a receiver. At the moment i'm trying to track someone down over here that still works on HF radios let alone tube jobs.

Bob,
Is Lake Macquarie Communications still in business? If so I am about 90% certain they would fix it.

Not this one ....i bumped the 110/220v switch and you can guess the rest. Oh well you live and learn. Only i feel this lesson is going to cost me plenty.

Simon,
Will find out if LMC are still going. Last i heard they were in Gateshead. Have also tracked down Commutel. They normally work on trunk radios (Motorola etc) but have a tech at their Newcastle branch that apparently works on valve radios and 27 meg stuff. Very rare in these parts. Thanx for all your help, will keep in touch.
Cheers and Beers
