Is it true that the transistors used for the finals in this radio are not being produced anymore? Mark |

Wildrat, Yes the Motorola 1969 Finals have been discontinued for some time now. The Motorola 1969 Finals have been discontinued and are being replaced with the HIGH POWER ERF-2030 MOSFET finals. A great example of this is the MINI MAG 30 WATT Model that has a single ERF-2030 final. ALL of the Magnum Radios are MOSFET powered with the HIGH POWER ERF-2030 Finals. GO to the SEARCH Box located to the left of the Forum here and type in ERF-2030 and strat reading as there is a LOT of information and posts on them here in the Copper Forum. Hope this helps, Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |

Wildrat, Sorry but no your S-9 that you have does not have the ERF-2030 MOSFET Finals in it. As I have posted before the MOSFET powered 80 WATT S-6-80 and S-9-80 radios will not arrive until February. Hope this helps, Lon TEch808 CEF808 N9OSN |

For some reason I thought they were going to be 175 - maybe wishful thinking. I better start saving my change for when they come out as my mobile is lacking BIG TIME. |

I guess that little tid-bit of information would have been nice to know before spending 350 bucks on a radio. Mark |

Wildrat, I posted the information below on the 175 watt models back on: Posted on Thursday, December 22, 2005 - 10:44 am: YES, it is for REAL and the S-6 and S-9 will both be manufactured in the HIGH POWER models. As I posted before direct from Sam Lewis they will be out the 1st part of 2006. They will be the same exact same face plate design but with a larger heat sink. Sorry if you ordered your S-9 before that time as I did not have any 100% correct information to post from Sam on the Models until then. Hope this helps, Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |

Tech808 sounds as though you get to talk to Sam Lewis on occasion. Can you humbly suggest either an installed fan or plug in fan kit for the 175 watt model? Know I would appreciate it. P.S. Just put the laundry from the washer into the dryer and put 5 more bucks into the S-9 175 watt fund - YEAH...... |

Sinker, I just called Sam Lewis and he said Yes they have thought about it already. Since the first Pre-Production models have not yet arrived when they do arrive they will be tested to determine if Fans are needed. If they are Needed they will be added but then it brings up another problem as any fan / fan kit will attract dirt and smoke buildup. Then this creates the problem of keeping the fans Clean in mobile use. And then another problem could arise as if the fans get clogged / dirty and cannot keep a good clean air flow that can also cause overheating problems. Hope this helps, Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN

I sure wish I knew I was buying a radio with obsolete transistors in it in October, especially since they have been discontinued for sometime now. You would think that a note would have been put in the description telling the potential customer that is not a radio technician that the radio has finals that are not made anymore but there will be a kit available to upgrade the radio should the finals go bad. Wildrat, You have NOTHING to ever worry about. Magnum has Plenty of the Original 1969's should you ever have any problems. And if you Sent your Factory Warranty card in when you received your radio should your radio ever have problems or Magnum would run out of the 1969 finals it would be UPGRADED at NO CHARGE to you with the ER-2030 finals if your radio was still under warranty. This is not NEW news in the radio world and this information has NOT been kept a secret as it has been posted and discussed on a regular basis here in the copper forum for almost 2 years now. That is WHY the EKL-2030 Mosfet Finals were designed, created and Manufactured by EKL which is owned by Eric (Sams Son). And this is also why the MAGNUM Radios are the ONLY Radios being Manufactured with the High Power ERF-2030 finals in them. Hope this helps, Lon TEch808 CEF808 N9OSN |

I feel better now, I did not know about the 1969's not being made anymore. I knew about the 455's so I guess Probably in my mind the 69's were the replacement for 455's. That is good. I also know that the radio will keep on working for years with know problem like my other radio's and boxes. I do not abuse my stuff knowingly IE. overdriving the transistors. My only worry was that I know stuff can go bad for no apparent reason. I also know that if my radio or boxes fail it will be well out of the warranty period. Yesterday I did make an order for a few matched pair and matched quad transistor's for various pieces of equipment around here in case of an emergency. I will have them on hand and ready to go so I am not down long. Thank You for the info and thank Sam also for the info. Mark P.S. Sorry to be a pain, but I just like to know. |
