Greetings all, I have just got my hands on a TRC 458. It looks good and works somewhat...the rx is way down and it only outputs around 1 watt. It seems to work also on SSB but again the wattage is way down. It seems to be on freq because i can hear close signals. It isn't my antenna since I double checked it with my other radio. Any suggestions on what could be wrong. Thanks for your anticipated help...I really want to run this rig unfortunately I don't even have a schematic for it. |

welcome to the forum! this chassis is the same as the Cobra 139xlr, the president washington (old), and the presidient madison (old) it has the UPD858 chip in it and is very modifiable. it is also a very old radio. its hard to determine what is wrong until you try to do an alignment to see what doesnt work. for now, try running it on an external power supply and see if that makes a difference. if it were my rig, i would replace all of the electrolytic caps on the board. they tend to dry out with age. you can do a search on this forum for that radio or any of the ones i listed, and get some more info. i would spend about a week researching this radio before i put my hands in it. look to the left and find the "search" icon. also, take the cover off of the relay, and spray some contact cleaner through it. also spray the insides of all the pots on the front panel. good luck, matt |
