I've never tried one in a tree, but, i think they would work better being mounted in a open area. You may have SWR problems. But, i could be wrong. A straight fiberglass stick may work better and be easier to mount in a tree. Gather up some opinions or just try it and see what happens. Good Luck! JIM/PA/CEF 375 |

I USE A TOP ONE ( ASTROPLANE CLONE ) I WOULD NOT CONSIDER PUTTING IT IN A TREE . I SEE TOO MANY ISSUES TO EVEN THINK OF IT . IT WORKS FINE 10 FOOT FROM GROUND IN MIDDLE OF YARD |

If the limbs would stay away from it it would work fine. Amen to what 1861 said. This is no joke: the astroplane 10 ft to the ring from the ground in the middle of open yard, field, will act like it is 60 ft off the ground. It's one strange happening but true. Has something to do with H-patterns. I'd bet if that was wet ground it would work even better. I wonder what a an astroplane would do 10 ft from the ring on a pole stuck up in the middle of a pond? Wouldn't that be fun to try? (BTW, I'm serious for the sake of those not familar with the AP). Mikefromms |

Like i said in the other post. I feel the height of where a Top One works best depends on ones location and surroundings. The 10 ft. height does not apply for everyone. Been there/done that...

if you did put that antenna in a tree, you would need two 10 foot masts. you need to have a mast running at least 8.5 feet below the ring for it to work properly. do a search on "top one" in this forum to get all the details. i wouldnt put it in a tree myself. you are just asking for a lightning strike. matt |

Heres the deal, I got a Imax2000 mounted up beside my mobile home, with the ant. base being about 13 feet above ground. http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f201/Truckn_Tommy/Tommy032.jpg. This setup doesn't seem to be performing at it's max. The Imax also seems to have alot of white noise. My question to the group is. Due to living in a mobile home park with height restrictions, would I be better off to go with a Top One Astroplane out in the yard on 20 foot of mast? And if so would it need to be guyed if I mounted the bottom section of mast along a 4x4 concreted 2 foot in the ground? |

Yes, you would be better off with a Top One (Astroplane) in a height restricted installation. Guying is completely up to you depending on your winds. |

Would the Top One Astroplane, perform just being 10 foot from the ground to the bottom loop? |

20ft of mast will put Top One 12ft off ground. Try one and find out for yourself, that's the only true way you will know for sure. If it don't work out, sell it. My experience with them is you may notice less noise on the Top One, but, not much signal difference. But, who knows might show different results in your neck of the woods. You could always sneak that Imax into those tall trees i see behind your trailor...LOL |

Would the Top One Astroplane, perform just being 10 foot from the ground to the bottom loop? YES... But, they should be 4-5ft above any objects. SWR reasons. |

yeah but them tall trees are one of the landlords prize possessions, or at least he acts that way anyhow. I was thinking maybe the Top One on 20 foot of mast in the yard about 15 foot from the side of the mobile home. |

Here's a rough sketch of my proposed ant. setup. If my calculations are correct this would give me 4 foot clearance over the roof peek. I'm not sure if this would be enough or not. Open for any suggestions. http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f201/Truckn_Tommy/Ant.jpg |

Or would I be better off to step off from the side of the mobile home about 15 feet and put the Top One astroplane on 20 foot of mast in the yard? |

FROM MY EXPERIENCE WITH MINE , I WOULD PUT IT OUT IN CLEAR . I TRIED MINE OVER HOUSE , 10 ' ABOVE ROOF , HAD LOT OF NOISE , I THEN PUT IT OUT IN YARD . THE DIFFERENCE WAS LIKE NITE AND DAY . JUST MY FINDINGS . |

Yeah I might have to go to the clear yard, I should be able to get about 15 foot from the side of the house. |

Thanks for the help and suggestions from everyone thats contributed to this discussion. After weighing the good points, bad points, and such. I think I will be changing the Imax which is only 13 feet to the feedpoint out with a Top One Astroplane on 20 foot of mast out in the yard with a 75 foot run of 213 coax. So once again Thanks everyone for your input, and a **SPECIAL THANKS** to Tech 833 for his post Copper Electronics Omni/Vertical Antenna Suggestion Guide. All these factors have been a great help in making my final decision. When it's all up and going, I'll leave a post on my personal results and performance. 73's from 852 on the 27.205 Northwestern, N.C. |

From the desk of revpo I own a astro plane...super, I had to reinforce it after winds tore the tubing on one side(swinging back/forth) I run a uniden pc122 and a small amp with it, if I hear it , I can wrk it, I also use a ldg auto tuner with it..it is one great antenna .. revpo/doctor/CEF 795 |
