Hey Bert I have 3 Galaxy 225 amps. I use one in the mobile withe Cobra 148 and works great. Texas Ranger696- Yes Alan9001- Not familiar with this radio. President Lincoln- No Magnum S-9- NO WAY Uniden Grant LT- Yes The Galaxy 225 uses 2 sd1446 final transistors. It also has automatic SSB. Bert you should not drive the amp with any daul final radio at all. Any single final radio should be ok as long as it does not go over a 2 watt dead key and a 20 watt swing. Now I drive my 225 with a 18 watt swing AM and a 21 watt swing SSB. This is actually a little to much drive and I'm really driving the amp hard but it has lasted for over a year now no problems. No more than 15 watts should be the max really. Definitley no more dead key than 2 watts. No 2 pill amp should be driven with a daul final radio EVER! I know people do it all the time but if they knew what they sounded like when the amp gets really hot they would stop doing it. Eventaully they wonder why the amp stopped working. NEVER NEVER NEVER take the advice from a truck stop cb shop. Unless they are honest all they wanna do is sell more amps! Sincerely Kenny CEF491 Da Hotwire Indiana |

Checked the specs on the sd1446 transistor. On the cb band.....5 watts input gets 90 watts output. |

Thanks for the reply Goat. What is it with the Magnum S9? The S9 needs a least a 4 pill amp and the Galaxy 225 is only a 2 pill amp? |

The S-9 is like any other daul final radio. Its modulator makes it a bit more powerful than average. Sam Lewis recommends the 4 pill because he is concerned about consumer satifaction and wants his S-9 owners to be happy with his product. Other manufacters can care less and just wanna sell radios. |

I think the S9 Could be made to run that kicker but why...you'd take away everything that makes that radio what it is just to kick another 100+ watts out of it? Naaaa Go with the Grant. It'll blow smoke with that kicker. I'd see which pills are actually in it OR set it so the Amp DKs around 50 on hi pwr assuming this results in NO MORE that 3w DK into MRF455's or the like. If it does have the 1446's then you may get away with a bit more drive....like 5 or 6w as long as the swing is below 20 as Mr Hotwire said. Can't argue with Hotwire...talked with that mobile from Ind to LI He's doing something right. Hank CEF559 |

Oh yeah, Hotwire, the Alan 9001 is identical to the Emperor 5010. I've been told, similar to the HR2510/Lincoln. Thanks again |

Thanks Hank! Bert as Hank stated about the S-9 you could make a dual final radio work with the 2 pill with everything turned down way low including mic gain and still take a chance but its really not worth it. Doing that to an S-9 is like keeping a tiger locked in a cage who wants out!The Grant should make that 225 scream! Happy New Year right back at ya! |

Narf, Just curious? With a perfect VSWR how much dead key and swing do you think you can drive two sd1446 pills with? Sounding good and no overheat. I just have bad luck I guess. Destroyed a Cobra xl350 (2X 2sc2879) with a Connex 4800 @ 40 watts swing 2 watt dead key. That was with mic gain almost all the way at min. |

Bert, When you Key the Mic with "NO MODULATION" the power that shows on your Watt Meter is the DEAD KEY Power. When you key your Mic and say FOURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR the Maximum amount of power that your Watt Meter shows is your SWING Power. Hope this helps, Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |

Thanks Lon, That's what I assumed. Can you do this on ssb and/or AM? Is it appropriate then to say that your radio deadkeys 2 watts on AM and whatever (say 18 watts} on SSB? |

Bert, Since you have No Carrier/Modulation when using SSB except when you are talking there is no dead key. When using/testing SSB your Meter should read -0- Unless you are talking or using test equipment that will insert a signal/carrier for testing. Your wattage on SSB will be your PEP or swing power out. Example: On AM my radio dead keys 2 watts and swings 20 watts pep. On SSB my radio Swings 20 watts pep. Hope this helps, Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |
