Pat more than likely suggested the higher quality kicker but if price and size matters to you...a couple locals around here love their KL / RM Italy kickers. They get velcro treatment to the top of the radio and have a very thin profile. The TS as Pat suggested would probably be the stouter amp if you could find the room for it. I rememder Tech808 liking his KL500 which should put you well in your range for SSB. Maybe he'll jump in here. |

One thing to consider is what type of radio you plan to use before buying an amp. |

Well i ordered a KL300P hear they are good for 125 to 150 AM and maybe 200 ssb that do the trick it's a little car with a little alt. But i got this little problem i found out sat. i have like 2.4 ohms from the bat/gnd to eng/block thats no good. looked it over found one wire coming off the head as a gnd will wait fore a dry day and look under at block to frame bet its not got one also feel i need to put one from frame to firewall as i know the bat/gnd is to firewall. O the head one is not going to the firewall? |

actually Al lafon, 2.4 ohms is not that bad, I deal with stuff on f-18's everyday and that's actually a good reading, on our meters the leads themselves have almost 1 ohm there, so I think you will be just fine with that for the KL-300p, I have one in my colorado on my 257 and so far love it. |

You need to ground it all. When I did my Jeep as well as myother vehicles I added lots of gounds. Multiple grounds. You will need to ground the equipment also. If your going to do it, do it right. Wildrat CEF674 EGCCC |

It would be tough as the switches are mounted directly to the board to the hatsink to the front panel But nothing is impossible. I run mine on low power all the time, it just decreases sensitivity and the amp can still reach full output. It works very well for me this way as for others I believe. Chad |

chad, lets get your input on this. as you know, depending on how the transistors are mounted, running an amp upside down can ruin it quick. will you take a look inside your KL300P and tell me if you think it would be better or worse to run this amp upside down. i know what i think, i want to know what you think. al, better to relabel the front panel on this unit. i thought about doing the same thing to mine, but its pretty involved. matt |

It's not the position of the transistor as much as that of the heatsink. If it is mounted upside down passive cooling is greatly hindered and should be fan cooled. Mine has never really became that hot, but I run it sensibly. I would think a single small fan over the transistor mounting area (can see the screws from the top) would work fine if the amp is inverted. Sooooo, a short answer the transistors are already (upside down) but the sink is in the correct position Chad |

The numbers they have are over stated unless you push them hard but 150 to 200 in a car on SSB works for me. Big power is for Basestations and the rare contacts. 73's al |

It's in i didn't know the preamp is wired to be on with the amp will need to take a close look at the schematic maybe i'll use the AM/SSB switich to bypass the preamp hardwire it for SSB. Maybe i'll look at running preamp at a lower gain also. |

al, do a search on this forum for "kl300p". there is a guy named INSPECTOR, that figured out how to disable the preamp. it only involves cutting one transistor leg. i didnt like having the preamp on and lowering the RF gain because the preamp adds some noise to the system. i disabled mine and have never regretted it. chad, so im not the only one that went "huh?" when i saw the way this amp was designed. its like its meant to be mounted on its side!LOL matt |

Al, I cut my preamp transistor, I never used it, don't like it, it's gone. Great little amp for the money. Getting ready to mod mine for class AB, anyone done this? Chad |
