I am interested in purchasing one of these rigs for my mobile. I would like to know how much the wattage and modulation can be hopped up. I have heard that they will do close to 200 dead key if tuned up, but..nothing is said about the mod.

Thanks :

I just looked at the specs on the 2290 transistors and it says 80 watts, there are two of them so that would be 160, so I guess if you step up the volts and everything and overdrive them it probably would do 200 for awhile,as far as modulation it's probably like most radios, here is the disclaimer: "I am just a rat and I know mostly about cheese!" The professionals will be chiming in soon though.

A buddy of mine in CT to my north just got on the air with one tonight. He got it for Christmas from Copper but had a local "Tech" do the freq and peak. Says it swings to 180 with the stock mic. Sounds great..very clean on my end around 35mi to his S/E on the Island of Long :-)
Hope this helps. Only downfall I see is NO SSB? If you don't think you'll need it then Shoot the moon my friend :-)

I have one. With just a basic peak and tune its will key from 15 to 50 watts and swing to 200 watts pep.The receive is great and also the on air reports are out standing.I have it hooked up on my 50amp power supply and i am using it as a base for now using a imax 2000.Just this past week i talked to my wife on it while i was on the way home from work(about 60 miles from home)and she sounded great on my mobile(grant with a 10k antenna)they are well worth the money if you want a strong good sounding radio.

Oh and as far as the mod goes.100% no problem with the basic peak and tune but if you let some golden screw driver tune it for you then it will be WAY over 100%.I dont think you want a radio to sound that bad do you?

Thanks for all the help !!!! I have a friend that says the 80 watt s6 or s9 Magnum is a better radio. I guess it just a matter of taste & looks.

4600 turbo will blow an S9 into the weeds!the only reason people like them so much is because of that top gun mod thing.I think i would rather have 200 clean watts rather then 80 dirty watts.

How can he say the 80w Magnum is better when it has not even come out yet?

Aircop12,

I am not sure how your friend would know what the S-6-80 or the S-9-80 does or how it performs as I have the only S-6-80 here now that Sam sent me for Testing and doing a Review for the Copper Forum Members.

And while Dennis / Tech291 is here this weekend he will also be Testing/Reviewing it.

And then when I am finished with it I will send it directly to Bennie at CB Tricks on tuesday or wednesday for pictures.

And the first 10 Pre-production models of the S-9-80 will not arrive for another week or so. And as soon as they arrive Sam will be sending me one to review.

As for the Connex 4600 Turbo I cannot say as I have never used one but your friend cannot judge or comment any radio unless he has actually used one.

Thanks Lon!

The reason I was not sure about the Connex is that I drive a Corvette and have to use a NGP antenna. I have a 3' & 4' Firestix and don't know if they will handle that much wattage. If they will then the Connex would be the way to go I think.

most any antenna will handle 200 watts but where you would put a radio as big as an 4600 or a magnum in a vette i have no clue.Maybe you should look at one of the smaller magnums,i think its called a magnum 257.If you dont mind spending the money get a Wilson 1000 or 5000 mag mount for the vette.that will handle any radio you want to use.
