I am adjusting the SWR on this monkey made antenna. I used a stinger from my 5000 to make the adjustments so I would not have to do the cutting on the heavy monkey made one in case I made a mistake or something. Now that I have the SWR adjusted I am going to cut the MM stinger to the length of my test stinger. My question is will the diameter of the Monkey made stinger make any difference in SWR as compared to the smaller diameter of the 5000 stinger? My 2nd question is a not so important one. I got a couple of those little lights you put on the end of the stinger in a Copper grab box. Will they change the SWR by putting it on the end of the stinger?, or is it not enough to worry about. WildRat |

1. probably YES, how much depends on the difference in thickness. 2. change the SWR's, probably NOT, but, the energy that is used to light the light is energy that would otherwise be radiated OUT as your TALK-POWER. |

Well, the quick answer did not get here. I went ahead and cut the big Monkey Made stinger to the same length. SWR might have went up a bit, but not worth nibbling at that heavy stinger. With the amp on I'm getting between 1.5- 1.7 much better than when I had the Wilson silver load on there. I beleive the Wilson is a good antenna for a barefoot radio and a small amp. This Monkey Made is great, better receive and transmit. I was barefoot with this 4 watt Cobra 29 talking 15-20 miles to the guy who gave me the antenna. His wife said I was loud, then I turned on the amp and asked her how it was. She came back and ssid "WildRat it got Louder!" I knew it would but it was the way she said it, the pitch of her voice changed and she sounded excited, like she couldn't believe how much louder it got. I guess I'm happy! The Jeep looks like I work for the goverment or something. I have my concealed weapons ticket, I guess I could help the FCC with enforcement. What do you all think? WildRat |

Forgot something, that little light couldn't use that much power could it? WildRat It's to small for the MM stinger anyway not unless I decrease the diameter of the MM stinger. |

I'm right here. Wildrat, when you get your CCW, you are also supposed to conceal that fact. Telling everyone you have a CCW will get it yanked in my state. BTW, having a CCW also means you have a responibility to RUN if possible when faced with a possible threat. Helping the FCC with enforcement using a firearm will get you in hot water. Even the FCC agents are forbidden to carry any kind of weapon, including a pocket knife. /lecture Yes, the light on the end of your antenna will absorb some signal. However, you could never measure it as the absorption is very negligible. Besides, didn't you mention you are running an amp? Why would you care??!!! |

You want to help the FCC (with illegal use of a firearm), but you run illegal radio equipment? WILDRAT, I LIKE YOUR STYLE |

In Florida I read nothing in the rules about concealing the fact that you have a CWC ticket. Just make sure the weapon is concealed. At the gunshows here they sell badges that look like cops badges that say you are a CWC. They even give an example from the criminals point of view. Who would you bother the guy with the badge or the guy who doesn't. Anyway I was only playing about helping the FCC with enforcement. I think the FCC is antiquated and needs to update there rules. I got two lights in my Copper grab bag, someone else was talking about them using power, all I said was how much could they possibly use, knowing it was not much. FCC would be like the Internal revenue service carrying weapons. Tax Colectors with guns, even Englands Tax Collectors didn't have guns. WildRat |

Wildrat, There is nothing in the 'rules' about your CCW getting yanked if you brag about it, but it has happened to people that made it widely known they had one. Since issuance of a CCW is still highly discressionary, and they can be yanked at any time, it is just a good idea to keep it under wraps. I know one gent who had his CCW in jeopardy because he told his boss he had one. The boss told the company owner and the hammer came down big time. The end result was the gent got to keep his CCW, but a restriction was placed on it that he cannot carry at his job or on company property. The whole point about carrying concealed is for protection of life anytime, not just when you are away from work, so this is a major handicap in my opinion. Could have been avoided by keeping quiet about it. I just don't want any trouble for you. |

Tech 833, I hope you didn't get the idea I was upset with you about anything. Most times I'm just a cuddly old goat. I don't think I was bragging about having one. I was just messing about. The only person other than who ever might read this post that knows that I may or may not carry is my wife. It's funny to me how things can get blown out of proportion from simple jovial comments. You know I think from now on I will do what Lon said in a another part of the forum, stay on the subject, and don't wander off. I come on this forum so I don't go nuts. I like to write things that are sometimes humorous, sometimes border line on stepping off the edge, some may like it, some may not. Since getting out of the military, I told myself I was not going to be serious, diligent, prompt, politically correct,or any thing else on someone else's agenda of the way things they think it ought to be. I was tired of the attitude of some in the military that they were legends in their own mind, they are in for a rude awakenings when they get out, they are just another person amoung the millions. I just want to enjoy life now, well try anyway, kinda hard right now. I like coming out here to this forum. Most of us get along well with everyone on this forum. There no cussing, cursing, back biting, noone pretends to be a know it all. If you have a question, ask, you will get an answer. This site keeps me sane. My wife thinks it keeps me broke, but I am having fun. I'm going to stop now because I'm rambling. Everyone just take me like a grain of salt, you will know when I am serious. If you read something that sounds nuts, it probably is! So See Ya'll I'm going to go ck the mail with my dawg. Talk about off subject, I'm a little upset to because my son did not show up to help me with the tower. Wildrat |

My son finally showed up this morning at 1pm. Rediculous! I spoke to him about his absence. He assured me he would be here early in the morning. I hope he is. I want my tower up. If it were not for the lifting I could go do all the cable & wire running. So anyway another day with out my base. What's another day when it's been over a year. Sinker and Starface could have walked over here, put the antenna up, stay a week, walk back home, and still have time towash the dishes. Wildrat |

Wildrat, I never thought you were upset with me! Sometimes, engineers are a bit too dry for the general population... I never get offended, trust me. Especially not at someone here on thsi forum. You're golden in my book. BTW, my pal I mentioned above works for a grocery store chain. His particular store is in a town and area that is not the best. They do get robbed once or twice a year, sometimes quite violently. Too bad he has that handicap now. |

Sometimes, engineers are a bit too dry for the general population... In my line of work we call engineers "IMAGINE-eers" I KNOW all of you out there have said at one time or another one or both of the following: "WHO the "bleep" engineered this thing!?" ~OR~ (said to self or someone struggling) "Somewhere an Engineer is laughing at you" OF course..nothing personal in fact I know you laughing Mr Engineer! ...in the event your not: God was showing a newcommer around heaven one day. He walked the man down a bright white hallway showing him rooms of people full of peace and content. The first room God walked in he raised his hand and said these are the people who died fighting in wars in my name..everyone welcomed the man and hugged him. The next room God took the man to was full of people who died of other natural causes...their response to him was the same... This continued to the end of the hall where they came upon a closed door. God and the man peered in the doors window and saw men and women sitting wearing ties and pocket protectors using slide rules and calculators. The man turned to God and said "HEY who are these people"? God said "SHHHHHH..quiet!!!"..God looked in then back at the man saying "these people were once engineers...they think they're the only ones up here" Hanky Hank CEF559 |

Gotcha, Yea I mentioned it to my wife (a CPA, has lots of clients)and I told her you were an engineerand imediatley she said thats why he's an engineer, She said her engineer clients are the worst because their so analytical. Like I said most times I'm a cuddly old goat, but somedays especially when I feel bad and have those meds in me I'm more touchy, so I usually will go hide somewhere. So anyway, I appreciate it when you answer post because I get a thorough explanation that I understand, I may not understand it all,but I remember and when the subject comes then I say oh thats what he means. So anyway thanks! Now that were done scratching each others back we can go back to normal. Wildrat |

Wildrat - I serious if that tower isn't up when I get back from Iowa I'm calling Starface and setting up a trip to your place. As for the CCW - being and ex police officer and having had a CCW or CWP in many of the states I have lived I can say very few people knew I had one and never knew when I was carrying. Now Florida is kind of a rare place with it's CCW's. Easiest place I have seen to get one, many have them that I believe shouldn't and the state even put out an advisory to our visitors (vacationers) to not be aggressive in certain situations because of the CC laws & newly proposed engagement guidelines - Boy did that make Disney, Universal Studios and the rest of the theme parks and attractions happy - NOT. From someone who has been there I tell yo what. You want to rob my house, tell me when so I can pack up the family and go to a movie, I will leave the key out for you so you do not have to destroy anything - I have insurance and my family comes first, now if I am home my first choice would be a nice Louisville Slugger Baseball Bat for sure. |

You will have to discuss that one with the wife, she's the one that calls me an Old Goat. Her favorite line is: "You Old Goat", next best is a variation:"You Stinking Old Goat". After that she just tells me that shes going tell my Mother. Alot of good that would do,seeing my Mom thinks I'm an Old Goat too and that I'm a little angel, well a big angel. I'm quitting, I'm tired.
