What exactly is the purpose to those capacity hats they sell for mobile antennas? These could be the ones they call "Zing rings" or the 3 to 5 radial jobs they like to call ground planes...which I know they aren't. I thought the original purpose was to change the resonant freq but why would you want to? ...or do I have this all wrong and am just thinking too hard again? I suppose if you had a non-tunable antenna and needed it to be electronicaly(sp?) longer? Whats the idea here? Thanks |

A real one looks like the plate on a old tuning cap to the ground below and allows you to shorting a antenna. On very long antennas like on 40 and 80 meters using verticals many like hustlers use a HAT most of the way up the radiator to allow it to much shorter and in the case of some you can TUNE the antenna by cuting off peces of the hat or adding to it. As for zing ringa well if its on the bottom of the antenna it's unlikely it's going to work well. |
