Today while talking on the radio this old fella told me to come over.Said he was going to fix me up with an antenna. So he gave me this antenna that looks like that predator antenna. The coil is flat metal. The shaft below the coil is about 10 inches long. I have it mounted where the Wilson was. That puts the top of the coil about 8 inches below the "Soft Top" is this OK? or should I find a shaft of some sort and get the coil above the "Soft Top"?

Thank You!

P.S. Just installing this antenna made the receive on that Cobra 29 a lot better. Louder and clearer.

After researching the Web and looking at what was left of the sticker I found out it is a Monkey Made mm-9 antenna with the short shaft. So my question remains;Do I need to get the coil above the top of my Jeep even if Ihavea "Soft Top"?
I am not going to trim the stinger until I know. I have put the SWR meter on the radio and the antenna is too long.

I just need to know about the coil location on this soft top Jeep.

Rat,

How is it working with it where its at? The soft top probably won't pose to much of a problem. If it was metal, that might be a different story.
Is the SWR good where its at?

So, he just gave it to ya huh? Nice guy......

I have not set the SWR yet because of where the coil is. I don't want to cut that heavy duty stinger till I know from someone that the soft top will not pose a problem. There is also about a 1 inch dia. metal support pole that runs horizontally about 5 inches from the antenna. My Wilson was fine nut it was a topload antenna. I just don't want to cut the stinger to get swr down and then someone tell me I should get the 3 inch coil above the top.

What is the SWR at now though? Give us some readings on ch. 1, 20 and 40. Are you using a barrel spring with it?

You say the antenna is to long now, what kind of shaft would you add to get it above the top? a metal shaft will just make the antenna longer, wouldn't it?

Not sure if the support pole will pose a problem or not but could be the cause of the SWR being off.

Guess maybe I'm not the one that needs to be try'n to answer your ? .

Anyone else care to answer Mr. Rat's question?

If your SWRs are at an acceptable level now,i.e., 1.5 or less I would leave it alone. The soft top shouldn't pose a problem. A metal top, yeah, I would get a longer shaft to get the coil above the roof.

I know what you mean Ratty, everything in your head tells you to get that coil in the air where its in the open but in reality ,in your case I'd think it would do ok if you don't mind the way it looks...I would lose sleep :-)
A buddy of mine around here runs a Wilson2000 on his spare tire carrier on his Wrangler. Says the load coil is about 6" below the Fiberglass cab. With his Connex33 he blows smoke...just a little less when he's not headed towards me :-)
I see no real reason to believe the 'glass cap would interfere enough to make a difference...that little copper wire inside my Antron is surrounded by fiberglass!
A friend I talk to in CT talks to me barefoot 25mi away with a dipole in his one story attic.
I think if its as high as you can get it meaning you like where it is then trim that puppy down and start talkin!
ONLY thing I would think about is how close is the interior roll bar to the load coil? PERHAPS you'd see some reflect? But then again I've been know to think TOO much anyways
Post a pic of the current install so we can see where you have it.

Good luck!
Hank

SWR is at almost 3 on 28. The top of the coil is just below the top of the soft top. The bar for supporting the soft top is about 6-8 inches away from the coil. I have no problem with the way it looks. I just don't waant to start cutting that heavy duty stinger and find out I should have gotten that coil above the top. Your right though I don't think the soft top is a problem but that support pole probably is to some extent. I guess I could take one of my cheaper stingers an put it on and cut it and see what the SWR do. If I can get them down then I'd put the heavy duty one on.

I welded up the new antennaa mount today and installed it. There will be pics of it in members pics. I have not adjusted the SWR yet. I ck'd the SWR and it has gone up considerably, nearly full scale. I guessI definitely need to use a different stinger now to do my cutting on tomake sure I have not got anyother problems. The coax length did not change just the heigth and the bracket is taller.

Go see pics, hopefully they will be there.
