Today I was offered a chance to buy an rci 2970 (the old model not the DX). Does it have good SSB & AM. It has to sound good on both and be screaming loud or I don’t want it. Pat (or anyone else) give me your worst. |

I used to own one for about a week or two...great rigs. I have a small vehicle so it was rough on the right leg to have it mounted facing UP in the floorboard ( transmission hump )...so I got rid of it for a president hr 2510 which IS smaller, but I aint too sure I want to use a rig like that ( or the 1970...now that I thought about it ) in my little vehicle... folks DO still steal cb rigs around here , so I guess I will just put something cheap in my vehicle ( mostly on 19 channel anyway )...( but I do some good 10 meter ssb talking on the 2970 ...some strange place called JUNEAU , ALASKA...with it and a 102 inch steel whip !! ). Like with my situation, the SIZE of the rig ( including the big heat sink on bottom of the 2970 ) to me was the major drawback...you can get a smaller low powered rig and then get an amp seperately mounted somewhere else ( like for me I may try the realistic htx - 10 10 meter all mode mobile and see if I can talk to ALASKA again with a whatever the output is of that rig on 10 meters ). But if you the basic controls of the 2950, the 2970 has the same knobs in the same places, it just has the big heat sink all across the bottom ( but mine never got hot to the touch ). You never know until you try it and if you dont like it, sell it and get something else !! |

I had one and I give it two thumbs up. I think it's an excellent radio. The DX version anyway, cause of the built in amp. Basically what everyone that makes a radio with a built in amp copied anyway. Excellent sideband receive and transmit assuming nobody clipped anything in it. Excellent 10 meter use also, I only used it for receive cause I'm not licensed to talk on that yet. Easy to change over to the newer blue lights also. Bulky, yes. But it makes up for it elsewhere... |

Well, I will most likely have a new toy when I see the owner in a couple of weeks. I quess I should have bought it from him when he was still in town, but I had never used a 2970 and did not known anyone that owned one. Thanks for the input. |

i AM sorry to see my post deleted. i actually believe it was among my tamest posts regarding 'opinions' on a radio. IN FACT, moonraker ASKED for OPINIONS on the 2970 old version. AND in particular named ME. MAYBE the request for ME to chime in was for moonrakers' OWN entertainment purposes. i SAID i own an RCI, a 5054dx100...and ALSO said i never bought a 29XX i also clarified another post in that the DX version is not neccessarily the 100 watter, but the NEWER UNMODIFIABLE (without the acommpanying circuit/plug)version, either watt model. MAYBE my post was deleted because i named someone else who had a 29XX that had problems. if so, so be it. OR, he could have refuted my implications by saying he LOVED his 29XX but had problems with repairs. moonraker asked ME to give 'my worst' regarding the 2970...i don't think i hammered that radio anywhere near as bad as i've hammered others, if i knocked it at all. my radios are FAR from the best in the world. the BEST, if it was affordable has NOT been made. i use what i have 7 days a week, and put my money where my mouth is. have a nice day

SHEEZ....i hope the media don't edit my news like that. i accept that the 1st paragraph of my 2nd post was removed . i feel other PARTS of my 2nd post should NOT have been omitted, but, hey, and i take NO OFFENSE at the removed post that was directed AT me. had my 1st post stood, & the post directed at me been edited as my 2nd post was, i probably would not have made the 2nd post.

I read that there is an export model and a USA model of the new DX 2950 & 2970's. The way I understood it was the export model could only be modified with the use of the expansion plug, and the USA model could not be modified for 11 meters. Pat, thanks for tryin'. |
