Well I bit the bullet and sat for my Technician's license on Saturday. I passed the exam. I have to admit that the test was not that hard!!! or is it because I studied for the exam. Anyway I am a Technician now. I am waiting on my assigned call sign from the FCC... Can anyone recommend a good Mobile type all band rig, and also a good hand held radio???

I have a Realistic HTX 202. It is a brick but a solid 2 meter handi-talki. It is useable as a mobile unit using a simple accessory plug. You get about 4 watts out but THE RADIO GETS HOT IF YOU GET LONGWINDED. The heat sink/belt clip must stay on this radio at all times.
My main mobile radio is an Alinco DR-130T. It is a 5/50 watt unit. Sure needs a middle setting of about 15-20 watts but you did not ask that.
For mobile antennas(2 meters) I use 2 different antennas. For most of my close to the repeater work I use a 1/4 wave glass mount by Radio Shack.
They no longer carry amateur radio equipment but there are some out there in the used market. Additionally, I use a Radio Shack 5/8 wave mag mount when I go on the road. Just does a bit better job out in the open shall we say. Again mostly find these used.
My equipment is not top of the line by any means. All is in A-1 condition and all are(including antennas) at least 13 years old. The Radio Shack stuff was what I had available at the time and I got good stuff and was sold to me at dealer cost.
If you are an Internet Auction person, look there and see what people are selling(used). Careful about the prices. Look at seller ratings too.
Lastly...congratulations on your new license. Way to go!! Good job and hope to hear you soon (on HF) after you upgrade.

IC-706 mk2 or FT-857 both good AVOID FT-100D !
2 meters MANY good radios like Yaesu FT-8700
ADI-147, alinco Icom and Kenwood all make good radios. |

darn...every radio i get is bad...first the 200gtl and now the 100d....i sure can pickum...cornbrown, if you come across a 100d for around 400, id pick it up...i dont see why it should be avoided, its a pretty sweet rig and 4 hams in my area use them, and use them with success...but oh well...congrats on your ticket and welcome |

Well, once you get into HF, you can't go wrong with the Kenwood TS-480 (either HX or SAT). It is absolutely awesome on receive, and transmit as well. Easy to use, but LOADED with features.
I've got the TS-480 SAT. (automatic antenna tuner model) It is an HF + 6 meter rig. It can be used as mobile OR base, with equal comfort and enjoyment.
Seriously, for the money, you CANNOT find a better rig. Go to Eham.com, and look up the reviews.
This is all after you get your General license, of course. |

'It is an HF + 6 meter rig'-the HIGH PERFORMANCE of this radio CAN be experienced by a technician licensee-albeit only on the 6 meter band, NOT just generals! maybe the $1k+ price tag would give initiative to upgrade?  |
