I think I read where Lon/Tech 808 uses tranny fluid in his, is this correct and is this safe. I have a case of fluid, so that would be cheaper than buying mineral oil or transformer oil. Wildrat CEF674 |

Wildrat, From my post in the Located in: Ask The Tech » General Technical Questions » What kind of oil to use in a paint can dummy load : Posted on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 - 8:45 pm: ------------------------------------------------- Semo rebel, I use Ford Type F Transmission oil in my MFJ-250 VERSALOAD. Very reasonable in price also. The same thing as your 1000 watt can dummy load, ------------------------------------------------ Hope this helps. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |

The question has been asked about using Mercon in the gallon can dummy load. I see no reason why it can't. I went on the net and did some research on Type F and Mercon 3. I found that the flash point on Mercon was actually higher than Type F. I also found that the flash point of both fluids can vary depending on manufactuer. The flash point on Pensoil Type F is 320 degrees F. The flash point on Pensoil Mercon 3 is 399 degrees F. Auto Zone brand Coastal Corp. Mercon 3 has aflash point of 415 degrees F. So it's upto you which one your going to use. I think I'll use Coastal Corp. since I have a case of it sitting in the garage. I think I'll go ck out veggie oil. I've caught it on fire before got some 3rd degree burns from it and did not even get to eat the Okra. Wildrat CEF674 |

MFJ 250X Versaload handles 2000W PEP The MFJ-250 VersaLoad KW Wet Dummy Load lets you tune up fast! You can run 1KW CW or 2 KW PEP for 10 minutes. Or run 1/2 KW CW or 1 KW PEP for 20 minutes. Run continuous duty with 200 Watts CW or 400 Watts PEP. The dummy load comes complete with a derating curve. It uses a quality 50 Ohm non-inductive resistor. Use transformer oil with this dummy load. The MFJ-250 Dummy Load has low VSWR to 400MHz. Under 1.2:1 to 30 Mhz. 1.5:1 for 30 - 300Mhz. 2:1 for 300-400MHz. Ideal for testing both HF and VHF rigs. Has SO-239 connector and vented for safety. Removeable vent cap. Carrying handle. 7½ inches high by 6 5/8 diameter. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |

I just got mine from MFJ yesterday or the day before, UPS delivered it and my Coax from Copper. You can get it with oil or without oil. If you could find a a very high wattage resistor, it would be extremly easy to build. Wildrat CEF674 |

It's not so much that it's a high wattage resistor, it's that it's non-inductive and 50 ohms. Submerging it in oil really increases the wattage it'll handle. I have a friend who made his own dummy loads with mayo jars and carbon resistors. He just soldered several resistors in series/parallel to get about 10 watts at 50 ohms, installed an so-239 on the lid of the jar and filled it with mineral oil. He checks them every once in a while to see if they're still 50 ohms and they seem to be just fine after more than a decade. I guess you could go to a paint store and buy your own metal paint can and make your own paint can dummy load the same way. Maybe even buy an inexpensive dummy load, install it on the lid of the can, and submerge it in mineral oil. Improve it's wattage rating by using the biggest can you can find so it'll hold more oil. Add a pump, hoses, and a radiator to REALLY increase it's ability to handle high wattage. |

I look their catalog over and over and over again. One of the ones I'm really looking over right now is their new equalizer/conditioner. They took W2IHY's idea, added a compressor, and they're selling it for less. |

Crackshot, Sorry but no, MFJ refuses to allow Copper Electronics to handle/sell its products. Try doing a Google Search for (MFJ) Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |
