Do you want a radio that has a BFO to make SSB reception possible, or something with a true SSB detector? A BFO equipped radio is a lot less expensive, but tuning in SSB stations is a little tricky. However, completely possible. |

Don't most radios with a BFOs lack adequate filtering for SSB? Goat373 - When you say that you want analog tuning what do you mean? A dial to turn, or something that is crystal synthesized rather than PLL synthesized? Also, what kind of price range are you looking for, and is used equipment an option? As a general suggestion, a mid range HF rig does a nice job for SWL and you can use it to operate on HF too. I use my TS-450SAT for SWL and even though it doesn't have synchronous detection for AM, it does an excellent job. |

No, the S350 will not receive SSB. It neither has a BFO or SSB mode. The lest expensive SW radio I have found that will also receive SSB is the Sony ICF-SW7600GR. BTW, it is also the least expensive SW receiver that has a syncronous AM detector! The sync AM detection scheme really makes listening to a fading AM signal a lot easier. Read my review of the Grundig Satellit 800 for a better explanation of syncronous AM. Most BFO equipped radios do not have adequate SSB filtering which is why I always suggest a true SSB detector radio if you can afford it. |

I've read that for AM BCB listening and DXing the S350 is a pretty good radio. I've heard lots of folks compare it favorably with the better GE Superadios. It's also got a digital frequency readout even though it's an analog radio - pretty nice. I've got a Sangean 818CS that has a BFO and it's very poor for SSB. It does okay on AM, but it's like a toy compared to my TS450. Having advanced receiver features and selectable filter bandwidths really is nice when you're trying to listen to SSB transmissions in crowded conditions. Were you looking at the S350 because it's portable or because of it's price? |

Funtimebob- I agree!!!! Here, there are about 25 tube radios all restored and working. The main receiver in the shack here is an R390A with 26 tubes in it. Blows away any solid state radio, including the TS-440S here. |

While we are at it I'd love to find a good used SX-190 or AX-190. My best swl radios was a 16 tubes Marconi Atalanta. Bought it not working for $5 from a disposal store. 2 months of part-time work (using the Air Forces workshop) had a receiver running that beat any solid state one hands down. |
