I've always been told RMS is where your talk power comes from. If this is the case, then why is PEP so important or atleast to some? My understanding is RMS is what it does 'most' of the time or average. And PEP only happens for a very very short amount of time, so short that a PEP reading meter has to have a circuit in it to amplify that signal to show it on the meter. Either way, which is more important and why?

Swing (PEP), makes you loud and proud. Carrier (Rms) takes the ducks out. I'd rather have a good modulated carrier, instead of swing or pep readings that are probably being transmitted or bleeding on other channels, rather than the one you're talking on. That's why most prefer Bird meters, which measure true power/watts/rms, instead of Dosy pep meters that make you feel good by watching the needle movement swing to the far side of right. 200 watts- Bird (Carrier) is better than 200 watts pep/peal/Dosy meter. Keep it real, and invest in a good cheap RMS meter. Wolverine. |

Well, I have a good cheap meter...and I don't trust it. So my solution to that problem was a Coaxial Dynamics meter... yeah that's the ticket... |

someone swinging 500 in RMS is gonna SMOKE someone swinging 500 PEP. therefore, RMS means REALLY MEAN SIGNAL |

Yeah, I figured that much. I know RMS is what really counts, but I think you'd have to have something to swing like that. What does the average amp swing RMS, like a 2 pill and 4 pill and 6 pill?

RMS/Dead key (Carrier) on those amps that Patzerozero mentioned will average between 70 watts and 125 watts. Swing or peak watts will give you an extra 80 to 300 watts. Wolverine. |
