I need someone to answer a couple of basic questions in non-tech radio talk, but in laymens terms. I am getting ready to purchase a radio for MOBILE use only. Do I get a regular CB or a "multi-function radio with SSB? My question is, if I buy lets say a Magnum with SSB, can I also talk on the CB channels with it? Do you just "flip a switch/turn a dial" and be on CB, or do you have to take the radio apart and either have a CB or SSB radio? I have seen pics of mobile set ups with a CB and SSB (Magnum) in the vehicle, so I'm thinking the SSB can't do CB with ease. But then again, I know nuttin! Please keep the answer SIMPLE for a dummy. Thanks. |

Sconover, looks like you are confused and I hope I dont make it any worse.ssb is a mode of transmission, just like your stereo has am and fm. A basic cb will have am(Amplitude Modulation)mode.Next step up will be the ssb(Single SideBand) rig which will have am,Usb(Upper)and Lsb(Lower sideband).3rd step will be to a export or ham rig which may have am,usb, lsb, FM(Frequency Modulation),CW(Morse Code).A radio like the Magnum will give you am and ssb without the need to open it up whenever you want to switch modes.Your cb channels are separated by frequencies spaced 10khz apart.Cb channel 13 for example is 27.115mhz and can be used in am mode, upper sideband or lower sideband mode.In the late 70's one advertising ploy was advertising a cb with 120 channels when really all it had was 40 channels available in 3 different modes. Hope your not scared off yet or pulling out your hair in confusion.Maybe Pat-0-0 or someone else can explain it in simpler terms. tech291 cef#291 kc8zpj

Now I get it. It's Magnum for me! Will a Wilson 1000 work with, say, a Magnum S-9? TECH NOTE YES |
