1. Will the KLV-550 Base Amp with its built in 13.5 volt Power Supply have the power needed to operate the Magnum S-9 radio??? 2. Will the Magnum S-9 radio be to powerful for the Amp portion of the KLV-550 Base Amp with its (2) MRF422's??? 3. Any truth to the rumor that in 2006 a HIGH POWER Magnum S-9 will be introduced on a limited production??? Tim CEF-634 |

#3, supposedly, but not in the range of the 95t or 2970, rather only around 90 watts...don't know how much truth to ANY of that, but MY FEELINGS on a 90 watt RADIO is that it's just MORE TROUBLE then it's worth when it comes to setting up amps & people blowing things up. 150 watts or 21 watts is a better choice. #2, the S9 will be difficult at best to make work with those 2 transistors. the texas star dx500 is the 1 that works BEST/EASIEST with the S9. an IOTA 70 or 90 amp power supply (can be had on E*auction at pretty good price)with the dx500 or dave/x/fat 4 pill would work REAL NICE with the S9. #1, not sure what the amperage of the klv550 supply is, but it should be fine for the S9, just that the amp is NOT fine with the S9. so, if #2 is too pricey of an option, it's back to the drawing board! but, the S9 (or omega force) is a radio you CANNOT go wrong with. it's worth the hassle & bucks to go 'bigger' on the amp & get the quality of the magnum radio! |

Thanks Patzerozero - Needless to say recently I have spent more than enough money on radio equipment but the S-9 intrigues me and thought if the KLV-550 would run it and be a good working amp I would have to scrounge up some money. I will hold off till I can afford the right combination. Heck I don't even have my base station up and running yet. Maybe next weekend - MAYBE... |

The power supply on the KLV550 will only handle a 4w cb radio, i.e. Cobra 29,25,etc,etc...nothing bigger. |

I run a Magnum by Polamar 500 watt in my Mobile. I keep the power at 3 watts and keep my modulation down. Several people have commented on how clean it sounds. I have an Omegaforce S45 Don CEF 336 Coffee Hound |

food for thought, sinker, if you go back to your TR696, & a klv1000p with it, you'd need a 2 pill amp & power supply(maybe 20 amp) to drive it at least 75%, if not close to 100%, then you'd have an amp that would work with the S9, at about 50% + or -, (gets back to my 'anything other then 150 watts or 21 watts or less is a hassle to set with an amp' diatribe). for 60 bucks less, the omega has the SAME xmit & rcv as the S9, just different that it's CPU controlled as opposed to PLL. not that the omega is tricky to operate, i just feel while MOVING the S9 is easier, but that's me. sometimes you gotta take a break, look at what you want/need, then spend NEXT weeks paycheck on it...if bill gates was into radios...he'd be as poor as the rest of us buying all this stuff |

I run the Texas Star DX500V with my Connex 4800. The 4800 gives the amp all it needs to put out the advertised 500 watts on AM. I use a 52 amp power supply no problem. Now on SSB I must use the variable to back down the watts because it will trip the protection circuit in my supply. So Patzerozero you are correct that you need at least a 70 amp supply for trouble free performance. I would like to add that the 500v is a very good amp. Personally I would make the S-9 the limit of power I would drive into it. Knowing that it does not take but half of the power of the S-9 to get it to work well. |

A bit off the main topic but the DX500 will draw in excess of 60A when driven hard...eg 50W. PEP meter has shown up to 650WPEP with a 1.3 SWR Don't forget to add some fans to the fins... |

Thats driving it very hard and may not be a long lived DX500. Mine is happy with a 25 watt input and only gets warm. Fan is also installed. What more difference is there in strength between 500 watts than 650 watts? You cant see any on the recieving end and possibly sound distorted by abusing such a good amp. To each his own. Some like to stomp and sqaush I prefer to just be heard. |

the dx500 with 4-2sc2879's is ONLY designed to provide the rated 120 x 4 = 480 watts. it uses SMALLER EVERYTHING compared to custom amps, which can provide 800+ watts from the same transistor configuration. 650w from a dx500 is drastically overworking it, but, hey, smoke & fire due to overconfidence is more fun then due to lack of knowledge. the next time around, you'll know how to make bigger flames |
