Well after having two back surgeries since December, I finally felt like putting my radio equip. in my jeep.It took me one day to do the antenna, and it's taken another three days to get to the point of powering everything up. I bought one of those noise suppressors for the radio that everyone was on about and I installed it. I turned power on and everything worked except the radio. It seems that my power pins were slightly larger than the ones in the suppressors. The suppressor pushed the pins in on the radio. While i was tinkering with the connector there was a pop, it blew the power fuse. I took the cover off and pushed the pins back out where they should be and put the connector on while I had the cover off. Iput the cover back on went out to power the radio up and it did not work. I was very tired after being in the Florida sun all day, so I have quit for the night. (At this point I know the power fuse is good and that the radio is getting power) The radio is a super star gold face 3900, with all the bells and whistles. My question is finally, do any of you all know what I could look forin the radio that would keep it from coming on. I do have some electrical\electronic background so I am somewhat capable of cking anything you all might comeup with. I do not see anything toasted either. I know this is a bit long but I will appreciate any help given, I might even let ya swim in my pool, if you bring the ribs and beans! |

wildrat, usually this only happens when you reverse the power leads to your radio by accident and dont have a fuse inline, but since it's a cheap part and easily available, check the reverse polarity diode inside the radio. it will be a black diode that might have a silver stripe on one end. this diode will be located right near the power connector inside the radio. if you find it; just replace it. i wish i had the part number to replace it with but i havent done one in so long that i cant remember. maybe someone reading this post can help with the part number or what kind of diode it is. matt |

Any high current rectifier diode will work. Needs to be rated higher than the fuse. Check the traces under the diode if its soldered into the board and not on the pins also. good luck! |

I see two diodes, one is D93 right by one of the legs of a coil coming from the power plug. The other one D29 is about one inch away by a small xfmr. I assume that D93 is the one I need to replace. I have some diodes here that are rated at 200v/1 amp, 1000v/2.5amps. I guess neither of these will work if it has be rated higher than the fuse. My inline fuse is a 7.5 amp. So it looks like a trip to radio shack. |

The diode won't keep your radio from powering up unless it is shorted then it will blow the fuse everytime you apply power. If it isn't blowing fuses and the radio doesn't power up you have another problem. On the bottom of the board around the diode, I'd look for burnt traces. If it isn't that, you need an xpert. |

i think you are right that it's D93. D29 sounds like it might be your anti spiking diode. |

Well I have not changed the diode yet. I went to a gun show today and picked up an old Mossberg bolt action 410. I have wanted one since I was about 7-8 years old. Anyway the wife gave me the go ahead to get another radio. I have not given up on my old 3900 but I am going to get another radio while the gettens good. My SS-3900 was tuned and modded out ying yang, so the new one needs to be ready to kick butt. So go ahead give me your ideas on a radio. Thanks |
