The stock mic on my S-9 sounds harsh/a bit high pitched on SSB. Great for DX. Can anybody reccommend a mic that would soften or deepen the audio somewhat on local contacts. Tried a mic from an AR-3500 and it certainly sounded better. I only use the radio on SSB.

Strictly for a tone change I like the Astatic 575. Of course they're discontinued but can find them on auction sites. Are you using it for a base or mobile? A lot of nice bassy desk mics out there if thats where your using it.
I've heard a LOT or RK56 mics lately...can't believe they are noise canceling! I hear no back round noise but are truly louder than one would expect from a N/C mic. Wonder how good those CDL copies are?
Love the DM452 as Lon said but I got enough echo on the S9 alone. I use it on my Grant when I wanna sound punchier than normal. Works great as a stand alone power mic as well without echo...VERY punchy and CLEAN sounding power mic!
You already know THAT radio doesn't "need" a power mic so why not experiment with more stock replacement mics till you find the one you want. A great HD stock replacement is the Texas ranger SRA-152...a little tinny sounding on a stock radio but talks real clean on a loud radio such as the Magnums....great heavy duty stock replacement mic.

Good luck

Thanks everyone. I am just looking for a simple standard mic for mobile use. No echo or power etc.
Was thinking of replacing the insert with a heil HC4 but that may just compound the problem!
