Depending on what site I go to I get different specs on the Input wattage for these amps. Bottom Line though is that I feel 8 watts dead key, although in the 1-10 watt input range for the KLV-1000 is too much and would run it hot. On the other hand the KLV-1000P wants 60-100 watts input to drive it so an 8 watt dead key probably won't do a thing for it. I do not want to have to turn down the radio to 2 1/2 watts as I do not plan on using the amp much. Or am I misunderstanding this and that the dead key would be 2 1/2 watts but the pep would still be the same as where it is now with the 8 watt dead key. What I am trying to say is I want the power from the base unit alone to talk around town and shoot skip when I can so do not want to lose power and turn it down just for an amp I will use on occasion. I am not interested in having to go with a power supply to run a mobile amp either. I am in no opposed to going with a solid state amp but it too must be a base amp and not a mobile. What are my options? I have a feeling this is one of those situations that you have to sacrifice one for the other. Am I correct in this??? Tim |

Sinker, Sorry but NO you are not correct. Turning the Radio down to 2-1/2 or 3 watts will make no difference on your output power of the radio barefoot. For ANYONE to tell the difference you would need to raise your output power 4 times to even show 1 S-unit difference to anyone listening to you. If the radio is dead keying 4 watts and the swing is 18-19 watts, and if the Dead Key power is set to 2-1/2 to 3 watts the swing is still 18-19 watts. All you are doing is Lowering the Input Power to the Amp so that the Amp will not be overdriven. NO ONE can tell the difference on the other end if a radio is dead keying 2 or 3 or 4 watts. You DO NOT HAVE TO SACRIFICE ANYTHING! Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN

Lon you are a wealth of information. Thank you or the information. Being new to this I guess I still figure the more power the farther you can transmit, so taking the unit from 8 watts dead key to 2 1/2 watts had me thinking I could not transmit as far. Do you happen to know if I can send the new Base Station I just got and foolishly had peaked and tuned back to have them actually reduce the dead key to the 2 1/2 watts? I will by the KLV-1000 from them if they do. Well actually I will anyway, main thing is I DO NOT want to void the warranty as it is brand new. |

Sinker, I have the Tune Up information listed in the Modification List under Tools to the left of the Forum here. It is easy to do yourself and just backing the power down will not Void your Factory Warranty. And will save you money on shipping it back and forth. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN

But will have to break the seal that is across the back of the radio, says that will void the warranty???

I know this is the klv1000/1000p thread but with that same deadkey(2 1/2)you can use the klv550(solidstate)and it will do 300 am and 600 ssb,a beautiful base amp and no tune and load to be concerned with, just make sure your swr is as flat as you can get it 1.5 is ok.Bigbob P.S.drive it on ssb with no more than 12 watts pep. |

Sinker, in your other post i suggested you get a KL mobile amp. I understand from this post that your only interested in a base amp. Reason i suggested the KL mobile amp was because of its 6 position switch. Position 1 on switch is anywhere from 20-30 watts depending on which amp you get. Because you were concerned about 696f being turned down in wattage. 2, 3, 4 watts you will actually see little difference in the real world. Sounds like you want a bigger amp like the KLV 1000, so, you don't have to push it to the limit to get the wattage you want. Good Deal! They seem to last longer that way. Good Luck with your new install! JIM/CEF 375

Because of it's boogie it loads the mount less, it's more of a vibration thing than a full bore resistive load. Unfortunately I don't know cold hard numbers, that's something Solarcon should publish. I would worry more about the aluminum. Chad |
