Hello,

I was told that the older Jo Gunn beams from the 1970's that had a Goldish coating to the elements got out and received better than the silver aluminum versions of today. Can anyone validate this and explain. I have the 3+3 Stars in mint condition from the 1970's and was thinking about buying newer versions but people are discouraging me not too. Thanks in advance!

Gold plating will increase gain somewhat but at 11 meters I doubt it would be much. NOW at 1296 mhz well thats diffrent at thoes frequencies the skin effect would be very high.
Another JOGUNN first...... Right after audio gain.

Do not sell !! Thats the Beam with the Gold RF Gain Leaf Paint !! It will get an average of 3-DBI forward gain if you point to the northern lights on the first Monday of every leap year !!

The original Jo-Gunns had a anodized
finish on the metal to keep it from
corroding...But, they found out alot
of people had trouble matching them, so,
they stopped buying anodized metal for the
production of there beams.
Never heard anything about a gold finish.
Hummmmm...

Does your 3X3 star have a gold color
to it or a real shinny silver color???
Just curious.

Dear Road Warrior,

The 3x3 stars I have (they were my fathers) are goldish colored. I own the Hillbilly omni antenna and these old jo gunns are a completely different metal or finish. I have also put up a set of 4 element conv. series and noticed the same thing. (the older 3+3 star is a thicker guage metal and more heavy duty built, it appears). A couple of old-timers told me that they compared them over newer versions and found the older versions performed better. I am just looking for anyone that has heard this or can verify. I know of and understand all the Jo Gunn marketing hype, etc.. however I am just looking for some info. My father got out like a bandit with this 3+3 antenna, president madison and a BlackCat JB-2000 amp back in the 70's.

Crazy if cut right a beam is a beam. Now at 1000 mhz the losses of alumin might make a diffrence and gold or silver plating would increase gain but not at cb. In short its not true and if so them jogunn is the only antenna made poorer that in the past..... most are better today.
Ask your oldtimers how they measured them?
the E and H plane and what did they use for a gain standard?
I hear this all the time ......on much more than a jogunn antenna just ask a owner of a FT-101 he will tell you it will dromp a ft-100d or some 23 ch set user ...... no mag 257 will ever compair .... SHURE .....

Fellas,I know anodizing,it is a metal oxide electrically applied in an electrolyte. It is electrically non-conductive,if the 2 or 3 piece elements are not buffed to remove this at the connection they will be capacitively coupled, hence possible trouble in matching. My dad in law's star duster is anodized except where the tubing slides together, mill finish will turn your hands grey or black when handling, but anodized will not.Bigbob

Well, if they are a goldish color than
hang on to them. I have never heard or
knew of anybody that has one of those.
If your going to put it up, just enjoy it.
The only true answer would be to test
your older one against a newer one. But,
i really don't think you will see much
difference.
Are you collecting Jo Gunn antennas???

Yes Bruce the old Jo-Gunns had a high
amount of video gain. LOL
My friend bought a Jo-Gunn 5 element conventional
beam about 13 years ago. The beam had anodixed
aluminum and he's never had a good match. Never could get it below 1:9:1/ We recently ordered all
new aluminum elements and changed the gamma match aluminum. Jo-Gunns have pre-drilled holes for length and spacing ect. Well, whoever cut and drilled this beam must of been drunk or maybe it
was Friday. Lengths were way off. We modeled a beam using a computer program and changed the
elements to correct length. With anodized aluminum it still would not match. We changed whole beam (except boom) to regular aluminum and
presto, he has a 1:0:1 match from channel 27.285 to 27.485. Beam works great now...
