I was told by the county that I had to take down my antenna because I did not have a permit for it... This Stinks because now I have to apply for the permit and relocate the antenna. By the looks of things I am not going to be able to put it up as high as I had it before and even lucky if they let me use that style antenna at all!!. I had to write a letter requesting a variance because Code says the antenna cannot be wider than 3 feet and my ground plane is 18 feet wide at the radials. My busybody neighbor complained to them that my antenna was too high and too close to his property line. To be honest the thought did cross my mind.. I guess I should have done my homework before I spent all that labor to put it up.

Cornbrown,

Yes, we have had to get City Building / Zoning Permits for Every Tower and the Rohn Push Up Mast that we have put up / installed.

The County has different restrictions/rules than the city.

They inspect the site before we can put them up and tell us where we can place them and then return when we are finished and inspect them to make sure we followed the guidlines / rules stated in the Building Permit and THEN give us permission to use them if it passes their final inspection.

As a Licensed Ham they CAN determine where & how we place them but NOT how high or what type of antennas we put up as long as we were within the FCC Guidlines for Licensed Hams and Airport Guidlines.

HELPFUL TIP!

Take the 35 Question Written Tech Test and GET LICENSED!

Always Check your Local City and/or County Building / Zoneing Codes before doing anything, it saves time and headaches.

Around my town we are allowed to put up
a tower without a permit as long as the
tower is not more than 38 ft high and is
attached securely to a structure: House,
building ect. It's not inspected at this
height. Now, if someone complains, they come
and inspect it to determine whether or not
it is safe.

Cornbrown, Man that stinks! Neighbors should not act like that. One day your neighbor is really gonna need your help for something and is gonna wonder why you wont answer the knock at the door.

I'm like Dave1, pretty much away from anyone that would care what I put on my 3 acres.
That does bite Cornbrown, you get it up and everything working good, only to have to pull it all down because of codes. Guess thats why I moved where I'm at. I figure if the guy next door can get away with fighting dogs and roosters, I shouldn't have to much problem putting up an antenna.

Intresting law ..............

Cornbread 3 foot wide? never seen that one how do they justify it? 99% of tower laws are safety laws and THAT dosn't sound like a safety problem to me.
Here in Tampabay the law is the standard 35 foor high and on a 2 inch or smaller pipe does NOT require a permit.

PRB-1 applys to HAMs only so you Don't have that law to protect you either as for your busybody neighbor I've got one too ..... He went to the county DEMANDING they tear down my antennas only to find they ARE leagal. This nut case beat on my door several times in the last month my 6 meter station eats up his 49 mhz phone ..... YES there are people still using them!

The county claims that because the laws they have on the books for CB antennas are so vague as far as how high and so on. I would fall under their general wireless radio antenna laws... which are very restrictive if you want to put up a CB antenna. If I remember well I can not exceed 15' past the highest point on my house, and the antenna can only be 3'wide. I guess an Antron 99 would fit but I preffer the exellent performance of my .64 wave ground plane antenna with (4) 9' radials.

Cornbrown, this requirement sounds like a bummer to me. I'm very happy the county here doesn't have something along that line.

Bruce, doesn't your neighbor understand you are legal with your antennas, and has learned to live with it. I'm guessing you have done everything to keep your 6 meter station clean. A 49 MHz. phone yet. I thought they were a lost cause years ago. I'm thinking you even went and bought him a new phone, and he refused it or something along that line.

Hello please take time to look up ham radio and
laws as back in the 80s the feds past a law that
keeps some of the more off the wall laws that county and states pass. HAM PRB-1 will also help
if you get a copy and send it with your request for variance . use a little white lie just don't
tell them your not a HAM !

I re-checked our antenna laws. A 38ft tower
can be placed anywhere without a permit and
will not be inspected unless someone complains.
They use FCC height regulations. But, i never
heard of them inforcing height as many people
are over FCC heights regulations in this area.
It mostly goes by complaints. If nobody complains
they do not bother you. Any tower over 38ft you need approval and a permit. But, again they do not inforce unless a complaint. Good Luck on getting your ham ticket Cornbrown

Bruce,
All he'd have to tell is that it isn't an antenna but a frame for a rotatable moonshade.

Where I live I can only go 35' up and if it is a tower then it needs a permit. I would really like a tower but guess the Top One on the tri-pod up on the rood and the Maco V-5000 on the Channel Master push up pole is just going to have to do until I move someday.
Cornbrown, wishing you luck and sending some good thoughts your way...

well after doing the bop and weave with the County Permit and Zoning Office. I had to write several letters, send pictures of my house showing property line setback, pictures of my antenna, and where I plan to mount it on my house, and many quotes from the FCC's website reguarding their regulations for C.B Stations, my radio's serial number, and the radios FCC ID number for my radio. I am pleased to announce that the County has approved the permit for my antenna under the Ham guidelines. Man I am so happy. I am going to have it professionally installed.
