Cool looking radio. Does it do CW too? I noticed the description does not read "CW", but I thought I had seen a larger picture of the 200GTL DX on the internet and it had a CW selection button. Anyway, cannot wait for a review. |

People are getting 150 watts outta the Cobra 200 better reviews so far than the Cobra 150 - Biggest con I see is that there is no talkback to adjust the echo level...weird. |

I believe Pat, I was thinking about the 200gtl last night seriously because of the price alone. I did a froogle and found them even cheaper than coppers prices. That alone scared me into thinking they were being dumped cheap and fast. Now would i order from these cheaper places? heck no! I trust this place from reputation and my past purchases. Gotta go with who you trust, saving $15. bucks isn't a savings if you lost $200.+ from a crooked site right. I spent the extra bucks for a different radio instead. |

Forummaster, Yes, i saw that 1 was out of stock and i think another 1 wanted my username + password, maybe i didn't notice it was out of stock? Another "Froogle" shows the 200GTL for $216.20 and $228.95 Both of those pages went all the way to the CC number part and showed to be available. Again, it's not about the couple of dollars, it's who you trust when you order it. Wht do you think I buy from here?

These radios are not selling well because most techs dont know how to work on them. And anyone who tells you they are getting 150 watts are smoking something really strong! At least i have yet to see anyone to be able to get that kind of REAL power out of one! |

If a person can log into the Copper Forum and are able to read this post then, #1 They do have a computer or a means to use/view the internet. #2 ~ Since they have a computer they can find ALL of the Factory Alignment Information for the Cobra 150 & 200 GTX DX Radios as well as all of the Tune Up Information for them listed on several websites across the US and Other Countries. #3 ~ All of the Information even has pictures with it to look at so if a person is a Tech, or Golden Screwdriver Chop Shop or a person who has never worked on a radio before they can learn from the pictures how to convert one or tune one or align one if they have the proper equipment. And even if they have never worked on one before they can look at the pictures to find the locations of the parts to tune or align. Blaming the Techs because a radio Is or Is Not selling is a joke. As for the 150 watts? I can't say as I have personnaly not seen or used one as yet. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |

they're not selling that well because they apparently just aren't all that good. don't know about copper, but a couple other stores say since both cobras have been out, the magnum line is STILL outselling them. maybe it's not that they're 'not that good', but that a stock galaxy or magnum is better then a stock cobra. |

Well c'mon tech808 what's the hold up(just kidding really),and I know what the hold up is,you've explained before to less caring indiduals. So to get to it,I guess we can assume this is another cheap copy of the tried and true galaxy saturn turbo design as far as the transmitter is concerned.I still say the next logical step in innovation is a built in 5 pill,a 2166 driving a 1969 driving a 2290 driving 4 2879s or 2 1969s driving 4 2879s or a 95t style with a hinged cover that is actually a heatsink with 10 2879s for a whopping 1600 watts output, all in a compact little box,we have the technology and it's only money,I'm just getting bored with "Hey guys look what we just designed" and it's just a galaxy saturn turbo in a different box with or without a built in power supply and a different name, phooey, show me something really innovative, like an S-9 that'll put out 2000 watts for 600 bucks, now that would impress me.Bigbob |

I have a Cobra 200 GTL DX and it is a great radio I like it as of this time the only trouble I am having is that the conversion that is out there to cut out R138 works BUT it skips the Xmit on about 10 Freqs per band I have been told there is a 2nd conversion that needs to be done but they wont give out the info (lol because its new and they want to make the money) as for the output power it tops alot of radios in its class I am getting a deadkey of 30 with a PEP of 150 to 160 on AM and a PEP of 220 +or- a little on SSB this is with a whistle on AM it runs around 90 to 120 while you talk so over all I like the new Cobra and would buy it all over again even tho there is a small setback with a few Freqs but im sure I will get all the bugs out in time If you would like more info from me or Pics of the radio just ask and I will try to help. dont just look at them GO BUY ONE from Cooper not the guy down the road like I did |

Well if we all communicated with whistles this would be a great radio, lou franklin once said if you want to wipe out your tx chain keep whistling into that mike, you've no idea the strain it puts on it,a good clear aaaah with your normal voice is the best bet.A retired tech used a scope and said testing 1,2,3 to set or check a txer.Bigbob |

Hmmm. If the limiter is active it doesn't matter if you whistle or say anything else. I've read that the audio chip has all kinds of protection circuits built into it, so I'm beginning to wonder if Cobra engineered these radios to not work well if the limiter is deactivated or adjusted too high. How that would be done is beyond me, but it's strange that I've heard that they work just fine when adjusted properly and sound like garbage when the limiter is deactivated. It's like a protection circuit gets activated and shuts down the modulation when it gets too high. |

If the frequency coverage is like the Cobra 150 GTL DX, the only skip is in the second set of channels in band D. Everything else tracks with the same channel layout as most multiband export radios.

Could it be that these radios should just be left to operate at factory settings? Maybe they dont do so well is because everyone wants to peek and tweek them all to hell? I still have yet to hear one fresh out of box bone stock. A radio at 100 watts should do well, but would it really do any better trying to pound 10,20,or 50 more watts without comprimising audio qaulity? fidelity? Not speaking about anyone but I think that people even myself have exspected to much out of a radio not designed to do the things we do to them. Just some thinking out loud is all. I think these radios will be good sets but just cant be compared to all the ones we love, not yet anyway. |

I dont have any trouble with the Audio and havent seen where there has been from other people that have them I do understand that they are 10 meter radios and I have mine set for 11 the power is stright out of the box never been touched with a deadkey of Low 4.5 swing to 70 and High 30 swing to 150 as of this time the only thing that has been done My radio is that the R138 has been taken out to get the 11 meter Freqs and when that is done for some reason it skips the Xmit on 10 Freqs per band whitch can be fixed but I need to get the info or figure it out one way or the other I will get it |

OK It wasnt to bad kind of easy Just look right above where R138 was removed you will see an empty pad set. solder bridge those pads and you have continuous coverage and wont skip the Xmit on any Freqs. |

you know what big rigger, you're right. i don't have one, & have only heard 4 of them. 2 were not impressive & 2 sound like junk. 3 of the 4 owners are not happy with the receive. i know of 2 distributors who no longer carry them, and from what i hear 'around', they WILL fade into oblivion unless cobra makes some changes. WHY would they LOWER the price so quickly? WHY would they swap out the transistors for 2290's, that make as much as 60 watts LESS then the originals? modulation problems arose EVEN with radios that were not butchered. back to the wattage issue, i asked & got NO ANSWER, BUT saw the same question asked & answered elsewhere-PUT A TVI FILTER AFTER A COBRA 200GTL SHOWING 225 WATTS OUTPUT & TELL ME WHAT HAPPENS. WOW! notice the big DROPOFF in output. still GOOD, but NOT as impressive as 225 watts! MAYBE for a stock 10 meter radio it is OK, but for what i plan on using it for, there would be BETTER choices. i too have had just about every 10 meter radio out there, if i don't currently have it. i do NOT see the cobra 200gtl as one to add to that list. |

Patzerozero wrote: "WHY would they swap out the transistors for 2290's, that make as much as 60 watts LESS then the originals?" Correct me if I am wrong but from my researching on the internet, the orginal Cobra 200GTL DX final transistors are the HF50-12's, which are rated at Pout=50w (pep). In the later production run Cobra 200gtl's, the transistors are the Toshiba 2SC2290, which are rated at a Pout=60w (pep) Where are you getting the 60 less watts from? Thanks in advance. |

EXACTLY MY POINT, CRAZY! actually, 2290's are rated at 80 watts, hence the 150-160 watt output of ALL the dual 2290 final radios(ar3500, rci2970, rci6900, 95t, etc) HOW MANY people with 200gtl's are claiming 200-220 watts or more??? not everybody, but a good percentage. you know what all that wattage is? HARMONICS! that's why you try a tvi filter on ANY radio or amp that is SHOWING excessive output & you see it drop DRASTICALLY. it cuts out the HARMONICS! & you only see what is real. cobra was probably having too many complaints regarding these radios & switched back to a proven transistor that does not induce itself to create garbage. no, that is NOT fact, but i would bet that it has a sound basis. as for the guys who say,'how come my 200 gtl is only showing 100 watts & so and so's says 200??' i would BET their radio sounds a whole bunch better |

Hi patzerozero, I just got my Cobra 200GTL DX. I lowered the dead key on LOW Power to 2.5 watts dead key and swing about 60-70 watts pep (for driving a large box) and the radio on High Power (untouched, straight from the factory) it is dead keying 40 watts and it is swing about 150 pep (sometimes hitting 160). It appears that the high power is limiting down and I beleive just some simple L-pot adjustments will make the high power do more. However, once you get to 150 watts, going for 200 will not make any difference on a signal meter, so basically the radio by itself is putting out MORE than advertised power and this thing sounds AWESOME on the air, on both AM and SSB. SSB, the low power is 12 watts and the High power goes right to 100 watts even. I havent touched anything but lowered the dead key for AM low power, and turn both mod pots for AM Hi/low modulation levels. The radio swings over 100% mod right from the factory. This is the best radio I have used to this point, once I fix the channel rejection it will be even more awesomer. |

I guess that I am missing something here. Spend over $200 for a radio and then tell everyone what a great radio it is as soon as you get the audio working better and the receive is not as good as one of your other radios. Also it is a "purty" radio and it will look good setting on your shelf. Excuse me, but I don't want a "purty" radio, or one that I have to re-design to make it work like it should to begin with. This radio just has too many issues for me to even think about buying one. I will stick with what I have and if I buy, it will be another Magnum. Sam Lewis will bend over backwards to help you. All the dealings I have had with his dad and now Sam,is nothing short of fantastic. MAGNUM ALL THE WAY!!! Leave the junk to others. Have a nice day. Semper Fi!!! Harve Unit199 CEF210 KBOYVK |

I've looked at the installation instructions for the Channel Guard in this radio and it doesn't look very easy. I don't know if I'd try it myself. What would diode replacement do for adjacent channel rejection? |

i suppose just like anything, you can get a good 1 or a bad 1... local with cobra 200gtl sold it...BOUGHT A GALAXY 99!!! NO KIDDING! his WAS showing 200+ watts on his meter, HE did try the TVI filter in his car & output cut in half! it eliminated numerous electrical/rfi problems in his car, the audio cleaned up, etc etc. he claims still to have NOT opened the radio. he said the receive had bleedover from only fairly strong signals, & overall reception was not as good as the galaxy he replaced. the galaxy 99 is used & cranked up too high. it may even sound worse then the cobra.was bringing it somewhere to have it 'looked' at. he wants 1 of my grants, or an S9... |

Well I just did the channel guard and diode replacements and WOW this radio is AWESOME now! No more bleedover and a quiet background. I know Patzerozero is partial to other radios, but I will say that I like this Cobra 200 GTL DX better than the Galaxy DX99v that I owned years ago. Hey, its all fun, I dont think I will be replacing the 200gtl anytime soon. |

Crazy_d, At what points / location on the board did you install the Channel Guard Filter and which Model of the Channel Guard Filter did you use? Also which diodes did you replace and with what value replacement diodes? This information can be a Big help to other Cobra 200 GTL DX owners. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |

not neccessarily that i'm PARTIAL to other radios, it's just that i don't CARE FOR certain radios. in particular, galaxy. the new cobras have not won me over, & with so many good/bad reports, i can't see spending $$ on something that's gonna give me fits. cobra is not magnum. my delta S***** on receive when i got it. before every body tried homemade fixes on it, magnum redesigned the receiver & provided a FREE upgrade to owners of the troubled early models, either by kit,or by returning radio & they'd do it free of charge & reimburse shipping. who else is gonna do that? cobra has NOT done THAT, nor have they made any announcements as to any problems with those radios. yet, problems DO exist. and NOT with every radio. that is even scarier. if the receive stunk, it would stink on 'em all. if the xmit stunk, it would stink on 'em all. but, there ARE definite problems with some & not with others. i asked elsewhere regarding my theory on transistor change, & all i got in reply was NO COMMENT. so, i guess if i didn't hit it dead on, i was pretty close. my question to you is, have you got a supply of 10.695 channel guards around, crazy_d? the info for the channel guard was easy enough to obtain, just curious how on thurs @ 2pm you were wondering(elsewhere) how to fix receive & 12 noon friday it was done? for any one who wishes to know, 10.695 channel guard hookup- Cobra 150GTL, Cobra 200GTL: Remove R91 (1K); IN = T708, OUT = CF2

Any chance you can post some pics of the Channel Guard in place? R91 is a tiny little SMD and I'd like to see how you have it secured and wired in there. |

Hi patzerzero, I have 6 channel guards laying around from other radios and bought a couple extra. I found the info for the channel guard the other day for the Cobra 200gtl. I agree, this radio has it great points and it has its weak points. I beleive the current weak point is the receiver, I have had much better sounding and acting RX on other radios.. but hopefully cobra or someone will develop a tweak or mod to improve the overall AGC performance and improve receiver rejection and tonality. Everything else is great (TX is awesome!!). |

Hollowpoint, I just installed it on the bottom of the radio, connecting one wire to the crystal and the other to the coil per the instructions. Be careful because the speaker/cover needs to go back on so you have to install closest to the wall of the radio. I got the power from the on/off switch not more than a couple inches away. |

seeing as i don't have a cobra 200gtldx, hollow, my ASSUMPTION is that at least 2 REAL SMALL holes were drilled to accomodate the 'in & out' connections, obviously + & - were much easier to solder in place. as for removing R91, X-acto knife maybe, needle nose pliers maybe, hammer & a long thin chisel maybe . i guess you can figure where i'm going with this, now that i've explained HOW TO INSTALL IT |

Crazy_d - Thanks, I didn't even think about installing it on the opposite side of the board - that's got to make it MUCH easier. How did you support it? Solder wires from the crystals to transformer shields? |

crazy_d, not goofin' on ya here, but being serious. i saw(elsewhere) your complaint regarding receive audio quality of your 200. recommended solution of 'alignment' is feasible. but come on now. just TOO MANY picky little problems with this radio. as i said earlier, some APPEAR to be alright, but then there are SO MANY more with these little(or BIG) troubles. at the very least, it shows exceptionally POOR QUALITY CONTROL at the factories cobra is using. if not just a poor design in general. cobra is just kicking themselves in the shin with this mess of a radio. if it wasn't right, they should've waited before releasing it. |
