I'm partially familiar with the early President radios but am not familiar with the "export" models. What all do we know about the Jackson other than am/fm/lsb/usb? I've got a chance to buy this black hot rod for about $140. Anyone? Thanks, Hank '905 CEF 559 |

The President Jackson is the same as any other export radio. Dual finals, extra channels, roger beep AM/USB/LSB/FM. If I remember correctly, it had a course/fine clarifier also. Had one a few yrs back. Nice radio.

I had one back in the late 80's and early 90's paired with a Gray 300. That thing could talk! If it is in good shape, I'd by it. Might consider the addition of a Freq counter if you get it. Makes it alot easier when above or below the standard 40. |

Thanks for the input. I actually found alittle more info on Presidents site..they're STILL making this and the Grant along with the Lincoln. Looks so dated...guess its inside what counts. Hank '905 CEF559 |

not exactly, Dx431. the jackson used a single mrf477 for its roughly 25-30 watts pep, though it could be tuned to closer to 40. it also used a somewhat different(read:not as good) receiver. hank, go to OPEN FORUM>>Hi, new here. Need some mobile rig opinions!>>last post 4/04/05 & scroll down to my post on sunday march 20, 2005. do you still have your grant XL? listen to the xl & listen to the jackson. you seem to use AM more then SSB, i think the XL sounds better on AM then the jackson. HECK, i hate to admit it, but the pluto probably sounds better AM then the jackson!(xmit at least). my preference would be either the president grant export or the 'classic' version of the same.(or was it elite? i forget)there is at least 1 grant export on e-auction right now, & a jackson just sold today for under $100, & another a couple days ago, forget price though. i'd search the net for NIB TR296's or general sherman's before i paid that much for the jackson. also a NIB XL out there in same range... you can e-mail me if you have any questions |

I bought one of the new one's last September (2004) off e-bay, NIB, and it was not the same as the one I had from 1987 to 1994. It was a black face Jackson like my old one, but did not perform like it. The guy who works on my radios here also said it was different than the one I had before. Find out when it was made. |

Here's the thing..a Jacky just got knocked off the auction site for being illegal. I kept in contact with the seller afterwards and asked if it was still for sale. If I remember... the rig was clean. This is why I asked about the radio. I know President is a good name and being an export it's worth a few bucks power-wise. Just didn't know if it was worth the asking price. I still have my Grant (always will) was just looking for more toys. Don't have money to burn just looking! (C.B. means Constantly-Buying )In fact YOU have me thirsty for upgrading my mobile set up (Pat is the devil...). Maybe talking skip on the way home from work will keep me AWAKE! Hank '905 CEF559 |

the ORIGINAL silver face jacksons & grant exports are BETTER/PREFERRED over the black face president & superstar versions, with the new european silver faced ones somewhere in between(apparently same as originals with questionable quality control/poor US availability). the BEST old exports are just that-old, & hard to find, if even working. most ended up with the same basic, poor, loud white noise receivers. a few had less audio then the majority. sure galaxy had some of the loudest AM audio, but their SSB stability (rcv & xmit) as well as rcv was not the best. none of the 'oddball' president exports were anything to write home about, either way. the connex 3300 actually is still 1 of the most reliable, though no SSB, a fair AMer, as was the original superstar 120. basically anything else was not long-lived since it was just another copy of a poor design. the latest exports are better then many/most of the older ones, though still not in the same league as the legal uniden 8719/8734 radios in regards to rcvr & quality xmit. connex4800/cobra148fgtldx/rci6900ftb/general grant are all the same & pretty fair performers, the 1st 2 being dual final & last 2 150 watters. the magnum clones are even decent, but hard to find or already basket cases, & the early rci's were easier to work on then the newer SMD & 'nonmodifiable' ones. exports are a BIG gamble when buying sight unseen/unable to test, especially at the prices they command, whereas a 148 or XL, if priced right, can be repaired easier-usually. toys are fun, & even if they have more value to you then anyone else, an item in need of repair is not neccessarily a good toy to have(like they say about boats-a hole in the water you throw $$ into. you NEVER get it back. i'd like to throw my boat into that hole) |
