So, I finally make my first contact on SSB. I had a conversation which I thoguht you may find amusing. (Maybe you won't, but made me smile.. ) Me : "CQ CQ this is 598 NY standing by" sumcbguy : "I hear you loud and clear 598" me : "thanks for come back. " sumcbguy : "hello 598. what is your QTH ?" ---Well, I don't know Q codes yet....so.--- ME : "What IS a Q-T-H ?" sumcbguy : "I'm in Canarsie, NY, In brooklyn ! What's your QTH ? " ME : "WHAT IS A QTH ? " sumcbguy : "I'm in Canarsie, NY, In brooklyn ! What's your QTH ? " ME : "WHAT IS A QTH ? " sumcbguy : "I'm IN CANARSIE, NY! WHAT IS YOUR QTH ? " ME : "WHAT IS A QTH ?" sumcbguy : "............" ---At this point, I manage to deduce that: QTH = 10-20 = what is your location Me: "I'm mobile in ridgewood, NJ" sumcbguy : "Good to hear you from NJ" I was asking what QTH meant. He thought I was asking for his QTH... DOH !

Yeah I get a real bang out of listening on channel 38,one guy in tenn.always says qrt and standing by,I told a bunch of freinds long ago that they were using these improperly, one said I was all wet, then he got his ham ticket, later he e-mailed me and said he was never so embarrassed when he tried to talk "cb" on 6 meters, they realy gave him an education,in language and etiquet.Maybe it's just me,but I try always to use the proper format on phone, why use q-codes when you can just say it plainly and usually more quickly, communicating intelligence is what it's all about.Bigbob |

As new generation of CBers and ham come in to our world, Pretty soon, we are probably going to start seeing Internet acronyms creep in to Ham and CB. Things like WTF,RTMF, cul8r, brb, ymmv, gj, imho, lmao, rofl, np, y? and etc. AND THEN I'LL HAVE MY LAST LOUGH AS I'M WELL VERSED IN THOSE ! I just hope 1337 talk don't start taking hold. Imagine hearing: "All your base stations belong to us n ur not 1337 cuz ur barefoot on ur cobra" Ken.

It's Funny you say "As new generation of CB-ers and ham come in to our world" There Kennjen. It seems that this is a dieing breed of people, Kids are in to the internet and there I pod's they don’t seem to be interested in this kind of stuff. I look at it this away if you did not grow up in a family that had a CB/HAM Radio in the car or in the house you are not going to be in this kind hobby. I remember when High Schools had CB/HAM Radio Clubs, those days are almost dead and gone. The general public looks at are out side radio equipment as an eye sore UNLESS It’s a flag pole and then they still complain about it. There is something important about us; in a time of disaster how will be around to get the call out for help when the cell towers are done the lane lines are down and there is no other way to communicate, it the HAM and CB Radio operators that will be there to help in a time of need. I wise people could see that.. I know this is only my two cents worth, but I know others will be right in there with me in this same thought. I think sometimes we need to turn off the Internet, Cell Phones and bring the family around the radio agene and teach them how to be a help in the world instead of the skate boarding brat. I know to them that it’s not for them, it’s so very few that look at this as a fun pass time, and if they find and interest in this filed if a lot from the military that will find there way in to this filed.

BigBob I agree that if you use the Q-Code that's fine, but use it right QRT is shutting down the station.I still hear Ham operators on HF-6-2Meters using the Q-code and the 10-Code.These guys that use the 10-Code have higher class licenses than me and they got there license before they changed the CW to 5 words a minute.Yes direct is the first why to go but it should not matter if you use the Q-code or 10-Code as long as people act nice to each other! Just my thoughts!!!Gage Take care All!!It's hot here in Iowa!!!! |

Sometme on HF voice it's better to use the Q codes then try to say directly what you want. Worst case scenario- bad conditions, two hams both with extreme accents (lets say one has an accent from Liverpool UK and for sake of argument the other has one from somewhere in the Southern states. Now using common Englsih these two may have difficulty in understanding each other, but throw in the INTERNATIONALLY recognised Q-Codes and the chances of passing intelligable information suddenly increases. Now at the risk of starting a heated discussion - Who or what says "Q-codes are for CW only". Yes they started on CW, same as many commonly accepted abbreviations but who or what dictates that to use them on voice is wrong? I know of no ITU or FCC rule that states that. The were created to speed up and improve the understanding of a conversation on CW, surely the same thing prevails on voice modes. They certainly do that when used on Digital modes and on voice in the aformentioned worstcase scenario. End of soapbx. Have at it guys. I'm QRT 73 |

Treetopper, I agree, and thats what I keep telling my wife. When and if all heck breaks loose, I will still be able to communicate with someone. In this day and age, with trouble abroad and in our own country, and the uncertainty of what could happen next, I'll keep my radios installed in the house and vehicles. KennJen, I think CB is making a big comeback. I have noticed an increase in the number of station operating locally around here. I think part of the reason is for the exact same reason stated in the first part of this post. When cell phones and land lines go down, ham and cb'ers will still be getting out.

Well, if you are drawing a fine line. Yes the Q codes are for CW. I think it is odd that people say QSL (3 syllables) on phone when they could just be using 2 syllables by saying "roger". It is like saying "hi hi" for laughing. I think on phone you can hear if someone laughs. I myself get a big kick out of the small mistakes like, KEY UP, if your key is up it is NOT transmitting but when your key is DOWN you are transmitting. Or SWR's. It is standing wave ratio not standing wave ratios. Or 73's. It shouldn't be used in plural form either. So if you wanna split hairs lets really get down to the nitty gritty. When calling CQ on phone, you are calling for anyone to answer you, but when calling CQ DX, you are calling for an operator outside of the US. DX is not just skip but a foreign station. So why is everyone on 27.385 (channel 38) calling CQ DX? I cringe whenever I hear someone on a repeater say they are "destinated". I always answer them back with, "well, I'm destituted". I don't think they get it. |

Slugo, Actually DX is ANY signal that is outside of the normal range for the frequency being used. For example a contact of 300 miles would not be DX on 20m but certainly would be on 2m or 70cm. DX (or so I learnt some 30 years ago) means distance, so in fact it would be quite correct for some contacts inside the States to actually be DX on 11m. |

Well, I guess you could split hairs there also on how many hops a signal takes but it is not generally used in that manner. 30 years in radio and you were born in 1959? wow, you were a youngin when you started.

Code use at times seems to be a format for some operators sitting at the edge of their chair just waiting for someone to make a (human) mistake and being the first one to point it out. So they can be THE KING of all who dared the airwaves before him.

Q Codes? Well to be honset they have at best limited use on phone. Shure you will hear on the ham band QSL ??????? and QRT but when your talking to someone who is able to hear you just tell him what you mean .......... QRU ? ............. It's like RST another almost useless term How many SSB signals need a TONE report? Well ill go QRT and read my lastest QST while filling out my QSL for the lastest contact on THE REPEATER. 73's Bruce |

on my 4th Sunday net I had a guy give me a hard time about calling CQ for CEF Stations. Told me to go read my handbook as call letters/numbers and such were no longer needed or required on CB any longer and he added this is from a licensed ham operator. I responded that if he was a licensed ham operator then he knew that yes it was not longer needed or required but that it could be used, it wasn't forbidden. He never even bothered responding to me so I went on about my business and never heard from him again. To much stuff to learn - my head would hurt - would need a cheat sheet to look at.... |
