Rightwing, I have a 1011D that is using an Maco M2050 tube instead of the typical GE 8950. The previous owner made this installation and I'm not sure if he made any changes to the tube socket, etc. I presumed he made this modification because the M2050 tube is easier to get than the 8950, but someone told me that this is not so, and the the M2050s are just as scarce. According to the previous owner of my 1011D, the new 2050 tube cost about $140, which certainly ain't cheap!! Anyway, my 1011D will swing about 110 watts on AM and up around 150 PEP on SSB. Radio has LOTS of modulation with a non-amplified D-104. It really gets out! Sorry that I can't give you any more technical information or detail than this. After looking at the M2050 tube socket again, I think one might be able to simply plug in an 8950 here, if they wanted to, but I'm not sure on this. 73 Harpoonman |

ok , i was thinking about getting info on rewiring it for a el509 russian tube. they are rugged, well built and available. anyone help on this one? harpoonman, email me please . at rightwing1963@yahoo.com ok? i have a few questions i`d like to ask about your radio. later. |

I did an 8950 to EL509 conversion on a 1011D a few months ago. The 8950 is similar to the 6LF6 but has a 12.6v filament instead of 6.3v. It is also a 12 pin tube vs 9 pin for the EL509. Svetlana has the proper tube socket (SK509) and plate cap (PC509) available. I handled the 12 to 6 volt filament problem by adding another filament transformer since the EL509's filament requires about 2.5A. Bias and plate circuit capacitance changes were also required. IMHO way more trouble than it is worth unless you are in love with your Siltronix (as the guy was that I did the conversion for). Regards, Phil phil@philcovington.com http://www.philcovington.com |

a 6lf6 can be put in the radio ,just gotta know how, there are tube substitution books out there. i know of one place that has the book on how and what to substitute. email me if interested for more details.. also, dinker don't be afraid to express an opinion. only slaves and fools dare not speak, lol

For the 6LF6 tube to work, the filament voltage had to be changed from 12 volts for the 8950, to 6 volts for the 6LF6. The 2057 mentioned above is the same tube as the 8950, just a little larger, and a few more watts out. |

i have a maco amp that used to have 4 8950's in it now it has 4 26lx6's which you can get 4 brand new for 40 bux! i'm not sure how they rewired it but it shouldn't be too hard with specs from both! oh and the 26lx6's gave it a little more power! good luck &73's, chris |

I heard the simplest conversion from 8950 to 6-volt tube from a local guy. Put a 3-amp rectifier in line with the wire that feeds 12.6 volts to the final socket. It's either pin 1 or 12. The pulsating DC you'll get on the 6LF6/6KD6/6LX6/6LR6 heater won't bother it at all, and averages out the heater current by simply removing half of the AC that feeds the original 12.6-volt heater. Yeah, this will stress the heater winding on the power transformer by 10% or so, but I predict lots of other things will break before it does. If the thing won't neutralize with a substitute tube, try a different one, or a tube made by a different factory. It's easier than 'tweaking' component values in the neutralizing circuit. Oh, and the big, fat tube you mentioned up top is called "M2057", not 2050. 73 |

Gentlemen, hope I can help you out, the 8950 and the M-2057 are generally interchangeable in amplifier circuits; both use 12 volt heater filaments. Now having said that the 6KD6, 6LF6,6LR6,6LB6, 6JE6C, are pretty much interchangeable in the same type of circuit, the 6LX6 is also usable, but there would be tube socket mods so it could be used without causing damage, because the pin out is a little different. |
