I have an 01 & 03 Chevy Impala with center console. 04 Impala has split bench seat. No problem with 01 & 03 on interference. The 04 is about to drive me crazy. No matter what radio I put in, I get this racket with engine running. I have two different wiring harnesses hooked up to two different fuse boxes. If I run through external plug or lighter plug it is even worse. I raised hood and went to battery posts. Same response. If car is running, I get this extra engine noise that makes it almost impossible to use radio. I had Chevy dealer check all ground straps on car. Well, let's put it this way. They were supposed to! I use Wilson 500 mag mount on trunk. Same antenna can be used on other cars as well. Any ideas? Again, my 01 and 03 Impalas do not have this problem. Thanks. Keith |

Keithinalanta, The only suggestion I would have (without having your car here to check everything) is to try using a MAGNUM FILTER CORD CLICK on the Link below. MAGNUM FILTER CORD Also check to make sure your trunk lid is grounded well. There are many different thing's that can cause this type of problem and without checking everything you may never find the problem. You may also want to ask your Service Dept to check and see if there have been any Service Bulletin's such as for the Fuel Pump inside your gas tank. Hope this help's, Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN

First determine if the interference is coming through the power line or antenna. Disconnect the antenna from radio and turn radio on. (do not key mic) if the interference is still present then its coming through the power line. If it goes away the interference is being brought through the antenna/coax. I have the same problem, and it comes through the antenna. Although mine is not so bad that the radio cannot be used. Good luck. |

Ok, I tried your experiment. I guess it is coming through antenna. But the trunk lid is metal, also confirmed by GM, and it is bolted to body with metal whatcha ma call it's, (southern expression), and where it is bolted to the body, that is metal. And remember this: same radio and antenna to 01 and 03 = no problem. 04 yyuk! Keith |

Keith, It could be coming from your Fuel Pump located in your gas tank, or Ignition wires, or any number of other thing's. GM did have a Service Bulletin out not long ago on the Fuel Pump causing interference in some model's. Have you checked with your Service Dept at your Local Dealer yet? You can also do Google a search for Service Bulletin's for the 04 Impala. As a Last thought move the Mag Mount Wilson to the Roof and let us know if that help's. By running a Mag Mount on the trunk you could also have a problem in the Coax from Opening and Closing the trunk on it. If you are using an antenna on the trunk of any car always use a Trunk Lip Mount to protect the coax from damage. Thanks guys. Lon, I went to dealer about this and told them to check all grounding straps in case one might be loose. What a waste of time. This went over service techs head. I will probably get that cord you mentioned above. Thanks. Keith |

One other thing here. Remember, with same antenna and same radios, I do not have this problem on my 01 or my 03 Impalas. Keith |

Well guys, we now have the answer. I have a bad computer on my car that is causing all kinds of problems. So as soon as the new computer comes in and gets installed, hopefully it will also take care of the noise in my radios. Thanks. Keith |

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! the service dept was clueless as to what i was even talking about when i asked about my durango. they didn't even know WHO TO ASK!!! posting on various forums, checking the ARRL website i finally found what MIGHT not cause problems & went from there. ALWAYS make sure to use the ABSOLUTE HIGHEST % SHIELDED COAX POSSIBLE!!! especially in the mobile even if it means getting another mount if what you have won't allow coax to be changed. the better the shield the better it is at keeping rf INSIDE the coax & interference OUT of it! |

Good Luck Keith in finding the noise problem. Keep us posted on whether the new computer helps or not. Engine noise can be a real pain. |

What about getting blower motor noise out of a radio? The higher I turn my AC fan up the worse the noise is.

porkchop, magnum power cord/filter & changing the magnet mount to 1 that i could put my own coax on, COMPLETELY eliminated heater/ac fan noise! tossed radio shack mag mount & it's 0% shielded coax in trash can & replaced with 3-mag mount & 9913 double shield coax. MOST of the fan noise was eliminated by the change of the coax, NOT the filter cord. |

Update time. Ok guys, I struck out!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had to have the new computer, but it did not take away my noise. Dealer traced it to fuel pump. Bottom line from them: no luck. At least they tried. Now, in meantime, I had stopped at a cb shop last week that has the filter that Lon mentions above. The same exact one. It did not work at all. I was really hoping it would, but it did not. I have purchased a trunk lip mount antenna that I am going to try. If it does not work, I do not know what to do. I will let yall know when I get the antenna on. If it does not work, then I will look for suggestions again. Thanks. Keith |

Keithinatlanta, Since your fuel pump in located inside your gas tank and if the antenna & coax you have now checks out ok then placing another trunk lip mount antenna on the trunk is still going to be within 3 feet of the problem. Try a Mag Mount Wilson 1000 and place it in the center of your roof and you may find your problem is solved. If you do not want to but a Wilson to try it just drive around and find someone who has one and give them 5 bucks to try it on your car. The only thing you have to lose is 5 bucks. Thanks Lon. I just talked with dealer and you are right. The pump is in gas tank. I currently use a Wilson 500 mag mount, have used a 1000 also, but even if I put on top of car, it stays the same. Keith |

If his fuel pump is like mine it will be hard to isolate the power leads, the wires run inside the frame rail and the colors are yellow, brown, light green, dark green, purple, white, black, light brown,no red though. My gas tank is inside the frame and fills the void between rear cross member and axle,it is steel and has a ground strap and has a plastic shield around it making access to wires difficult without dropping gas tank, this is in a 1996 wt-1500 chevy 2wd half ton pick-up,fuel pump noise is grating and can be nerve wracking, have had several cars with electric in tank fuel pumps and no problems till this one.Thought of replacing fuel pump with external Holley gph-110(110 gallons per hour)at 25 psi with an adjustable regulator, but too pricy,300$,I must get a schematic of electrical system if possible to isolate the power leads.Bigbob |
