Hello there, I am in Hong Kong and just picked up a PC size 12 volt 4amp PS for my FT-817. Hey I even found the obscure type power socket plug that yaesu use on it. I have a question, on the end of the lead (the 12 volt into radio end) there is a 1 inch long plastic bulb like thing about 4 inches from the plug end. It seems solid inside etc, but I really need to cut it off to be able to install the new power plug. Does anyone know what the purpose of this egg type bulb serve, and will cutting it off cause any dramas? I thought it might be a filter type device. I await your thoughts.
Cheers

I guess the point is moot, with it on you can't use it,so clip it off or return it and find one that has none.Bigbob

well no, I don't think the point is moot, it was a pretty straight forward tech question, basically what does the circular plastic bulb like device serve at the end of the power lead? I am actually quite curious as I have seen them on other PC laptop supplies as well, they are always approx 4-5 inches from plug. I am sure a tech must know the purpose of this "thing"!

Sixtiesmania,

Sorry, but I honestly have no idea what it would be for as I have never seen one or have any idea what it would be for.

Sixtiesmania,

If it is like what you see on computer cables,it is a ferrit core with heatshrink on it.More than likely put there in hopes of reducing ignition noise entering the radio on the power leads.I have also seen them on many car audio systems.

Thankyou!! I thought it might be a ferrit coil of some type. Would chopping it off cause much drama do you think? I mean it's obviously there for a reason BUT physically it's a real pain being there!

Sixtiesmania,
I see no problem removing it to run on a power supply. If possible clip the lead long enough in case you may want to go mobile at a later date,it can be reattached.
