I have a Magnum 257 (orange display) and the radio works great on ssb, however AM is weak at best. With amc turned to the maximum, I have to whistle as loud as loud as I can to get any modulation. Where is the amc limiter in this radio??????????????????????????????????????? I know the problems associated with removing the limiter..

Dst,

Magnum 257 - Models before 11/2004

TUNE – UP / POWER TWEAKS

Remove bottom cover
Locate RV16. (AM Power)
Adjust RV16 for a carrier of 10 watts on AM mode with the RF Power knob turned fully clockwise. With the RF Power knob turned fully counter-clockwise, the AM carrier should be 1 watt.
Locate RV4. (Modulation)
Adjust RV4 for maximum modulation.
Locate RV9. (SSB Power)
Adjust RV9 for maximum forward power in SSB mode.
Locate RV8. (RF Meter)
With RF Output power knob adjusted to show a 5 watt carrier, adjust RV8 just until the 3rd RF power bar lights up.

Hope this help's,

Lon

Jon666,

Sorry, I cannot help on this one as I have only worked on only 6 of them and our own and all of them have had 100% modulation on AM.

Have you called Sam Lewis at Magnum International at: 1-877-624-6869 and asked him about it?

Jon,

The stock mic that comes with the 257/357 series is actually a power mic! There is an adjustment inside the mic to turn the power up/down.. I have seen it - but personally never adjusted it.

Has it always been weak, or just now started?

I think I goofed. I was going to set the RF Meter but I turned RV1 not RV8 (Curse This Old Fading Eyesight Of Mine). Did I do something bad of do I need to have it realigned? Mine is the older model but it has the factory update in it installed when I sent it back for a warranty repair.
Please can someone tell me what I have done to it?

Wildchild,

RV-1 is used to adjust your RX Alignment.

If you can remember where it was set at before you moved it try and put it back as close as you can.

If you still have good Receive you may be OK if not you may have to have it re-aligned.

RV1 is used along with RV402 and you will need a Scope and a Signal generator to get it back to where it is Dead On.

If you know of someone who can do it and has the equipment they will need to follow the information below.

Adjust RV1 (100KB) for "9" S-RF at EMF 46db in AM E Band Channel 20 and Adjust RV402 (50K) so that you can just see RX wave form EMF 66db and squelch volume maximum.

Hope this help's,

Lon
