Hi guys. From my post about horizontal beam antenna, Lon had posted about the Maco M 103 Beam. In the info part it talks about Gamma Match. I have read the terminology for years, but never knew what it means. So how about some more eudcation here. What does Gamma match mean? Thank you!! Keith in Atlanta |

ZOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!, seen that one go right over Keiths' head only kidding Keith simply put,a gamma is the easiest way to match the coax impeadance to the antenna. tech291 CEF#291 kc8zpj |

I am embarrassed to say it, but I am with Keith, I know what it does, but how does it do it? Could you do the same thing by adding length to your antenn radial, or shortening them? Is a gamma match a must on a beam? Rich |

"Gamma Match" Is a device that simplifies adjusting the antenna. The gamma match is a type of matching transformer used to match the feedpoint impedance of the antenna (which rarely is 50 Ohm) to the 50 Ohm coax. This is especially necessary on beams with more elements (more than 4) because the impedance at the feedpoint is naturally low (around 20 Ohms). The gamma match is a capacitor and an inductor tap,the radiator being the inductor, you have an L/C circuit for matching the impedance of the radiator to the transmission line, simplest explanation I can give.Bigbob |

Gamma match is a capacitor that you can adjust for inpedance to match the feedpoint and coax to get the lowest swr , Ideal is 1:1 ratio. adjust feedpoint to the low swr and you have a allmost perfect match. its about ohms and matching ! If you are talking about cb adjust the gamma match to its lowest swr on channel 20 (MID BAND) Then you will be happy and ready to make contacts moderator136 CEF136 kc0svc |
