1861, Well I can only offer you our own Personal Experience. Our Pyramid PS-52KX and our Tripp-Lite PR-25 are on from 5 or 6 am until midnight most every day and sometimes for 48 hrs or more if we forget to turn them off, 7 days a week 365 days a year. The Pyramid is going on 3 years now and the Tripp-Lite almost 2 years now. They power everything on the Test Bench and the 2970DX, Magnum 257, Lincoln, Meter's, Feq Counter's, Yaesu FT-2800 2 Meter and the Ranger 5054DX 6 Meter. But we also have twin 4" fans on the Pyramid and a single 4" fan on the Triplite power supplies to prevent them from over heating. And the fans do circulate the air in the radio room as the Triplite is about 5 feet from the Pryamid power supply. Never had any problem's so far Except you do NOT want to pay our power bill each month. As for any Amplifiers they are NEVER turned on unless we are going to test them or use them and then when we are finished they are turned off. Sometimes the radio's may go 24 hours or more without ever being keyed up depending on which radio we are using for the day. Hope this help's Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |

Most quality power supplies wont even blink about being left on forever, but as far as an amp, if it is transistor, no big deal, if it is tube, not a healthy thing to do! Rich |

I know this is old news but I thought I would add my $.02 worth anyway. I leave both the 35amp Astron and 35amp Pyramid power supplies on 24/7. They have been on except for a few minor power outages for 5 or 6 years and are still working fine. As for the amp - it is a Palomar "Skipper 350HD" base amp. It is plugged in 24/7 with the main AC power supply switch always on. That way if I need the preamp or the amp I just reach down to the shelf under the desk and switch it on. Its always ready to go when needed. I usually run it on the Low setting. The Robyn SB-540D and the Washington will drive it to around 60-80 watts and the 2985 will drive it to around 100-120 watts on AM. If I push it on High power with the 2985 it will peak a little over 400 watts BUT it does not sound clean and clear that way so I dont run it with that much drive. If an amp and radio are set up right the audio quality should not change when the amp is turned on. It should just get louder it should NOT get distorted. If it does you are over driving the radio or the amp. I hear SOoooo many radios out there any more that to be honest sound very bad. They sound over modulated and distorted. They sound like the operator is sitting there screaming into the mic. This is NOT nice to listen to. I cannot stand to listen to much of that noise. I usually keep changing channels till I find one where the radio signals are LOUD and CLEAR with no distortion. Thats why I dont monitor channel 6. There are so many bad sounding radios with the limiters clipped, they transmit on about 10 to 20 channels. This is NOT the way a transmitter should sound. We monitor channel 4 a lot around here to get away from some of the truck traffic on 19 and then we have to put up with all the sloppy over modulated splatter from channel 6. Some days it gets VERY irritating. That channel 6 and a few others like it really need to be cleaned up. Anyway Ill get off my soapbox now. 73 for now, Im QRT and off the key, CEF 507

The only time my Pyramid PS-35 is powered down, is if the city power goes down. The only thing that gets turned off are the radios connected to the supply when not in use or during a thunder and lightning storm and then all coaxs are disconnected. |

I leave my equipment on 24/7 also. Sometimes i think it's is harder on things if turned off and on alot of times during the coarse of a day. JIM/PA/CEF 375 |

I leave my tube amp "on" and in "standby" If I am sitting near the base and leave tube amp "off" if just monitoring.(such as doing chores around the house) Seems like when it is warmed up good and the hotter it gets, the more power it throws out. |

Hmmmm, Whats the benefit you get by leaving your power supply on forever? Also why would you wanna leave your amp on forever? My amp works good no matter if its ice cold or really hot. I prefer it to stay cool so I use a fan on it when ever its on standby or transmit. I have thought about using the breaker to shut it all down to save wear and tear on the equipment switches. Just curious. |

Hotwire- the only equipment i run is my RCI 2995dx with built in amp which is on 24/7. I have the fan-kit on it. I guess if a person had a mobile hooked up to a power-supply and wanted to run radio 24/7, the power supply would have to stay on also. My friend has a 60 Amp tripp-lite power supply which has been on 24/7 (except during lightning storms) for almost 7 years. His radio a RCI 2970DX has been on for almost 11 years now. Any benefits??? I'm only going by the old saying that it's better to let something run than to shut it off and on all the time. Whether it's right or wrong, I do not know... But, i've seen my equipment and others last a long time being left on. But, who's to say how long it would last if turned off and on all the time...LOL... The world may never know...LOL

There's no good reason to let your solid state equipment running if you're not using it - you're just wasting electricity. An exception could be made for a brief warm up period so the oscillator can stabilize, but that generally takes less than an hour and is only critical on SSB or CW, not AM. If you're running tube equipment it's a different story because tubes need heat to function properly, and that takes time. Also, the heating/cooling cycle can cause the elements to fail if it happens too quickly. |

most if not all solidstate base cb radios are designed/manufactured to where the power supply is always powered up when the unit is plugged into the house current. The on/off power switch is between the power supply and the radio chassis. When a power transformer is powered down a voltage spike is created by the collapse of the magnetic field in the transformer core. The same principal that makes the ignition coil work in your automobile.
