Backward modulation usually means the carrier is set too high. Was it like that from the factory or has someone "tuned it up?"

What exactly happens? You key the mic and the meter shows a power level, then you speak into the microphone and the needle backs up rather than goes forward?

Does it sound okay on the air?

is it a meter in the radio that swings backward, or an external wattmeter that swings backward?

Determine what patzerozero said first. Is it on both meters? What's the deadkey set at when you don't talk into the mic? I have ran into these issues before and just had it turned too high. I would say if it's deadkeying over 4 watts, turn it down to like 2-3 watts or so. I like more swing on mine but to each his own. good luck
