if there was one answer for that question, no one would spend the dough for a bird 43p. they would jsut buy a hundred dollar dosy meter and do the conversion in their head. sorry, but this is not a linear scale, you cant say that 1400 bird watts is 2000 dosy watts etc... the fact is that a dosy meter is barely accurate at the lowest end of the scale and gets worse from there. if you really care exactly how many watts you are putting out, you need a bird meter. if you just want to see a needle swing, buy the radio shack one. much cheaper and just as accurate as any dosy. matt |

Kid Vicious is a little blunt, but he's right. Comparing a Bird 43 to a Dosy is like comparing apples to oranges. They're both fruit, but the similarity ends there. To answer your question....Illegal. |

99.9% of the time, when referring to 'bird' watts, they mean REAL, TRUE, CARRIER power, or RMS WATTS. a bird 43(along with coaxial dynamics & 1 or 2 others) doesn't have switches for wattage scales, but use a plug in element for what should be read as your highest output. where your dosy SHOULD be switched to the low scale for your radio, then the mid scale for the driver box & lastly the high scale for the big box, the bird requires you to change the element 3 times. to check 2.5 watts from radio, plug in 5 or 10 watt element. for 65 watts key from driver, switch to 100 watt element. finally, use 500 or 1000 watt element to see 300 watt dead key from 8 pill box. these elements are calibrated to a 5% or so tolerance-AT FULL HANDLING POWER. trying to read 2.5 watts on the 1000 watt slug is-useless at best. part of the inaccuracy problem of the dosy, or paradynamics, or radio shack meters even, is they are being used incorrectly. YOU CANNOT ACCURATELY MEASURE 2.5 WATTS WHEN THE DOSY IS SWITCHED TO 5000 WATT SCALE!!!! you can't begin to imagine how many people i've had tell me their texas star dx350 was doing 500 watts! take it off the 5000 watt scale & put it on the 500 watt scale & watch it drop to 225 watts!!! closer to reality!!! swing on an RMS meter is MUCH less then on a peak reading meter, & more of a true guage as to what power is coming out. adding in the accuracy of the bird 43 is where 'bird watts' comes from. the peak reading meters on the dosy & others are nothing more then relative. the peak reading mod for a bird meter is around $300-on top of a $600 meter!!! due to the cost, most birds are RMS, hence the moniker, 'bird watts', even when talking about swing. even on the bird, the PEP measurements' tolerance is upped to 10% because of the needles' inability to follow the 'swings' up & down as quickly as they really happen. on the dosy, momentum alone accounts for some high swinging wattage! as the saying goes,'swing is king-but dead key rules' accounts for the need of a bird meter. too much dead key, whether from the radio, the driver or the big box is what destroys the power transistors. hope that expanded on what kid vicious said. |

I have never gotten to play w/ a bird or a dosy meter. But IF I want to check the power on my little junk meter(rat shak) I have always used the lowest setting possible, and have never had a box read 500 watts if it was a little 350 or what. I have always had them read less, but never more. sg569 |

most amps are WAY overrated, so if you read 100 or so less then its name, you're probably close Sg549. but, you'd be surprised how many people read the 5000 watt scale using their 100 watt amp & see it as doing 250 watts! amazing! |

Thanks Pat, ya know someday I might be able to afford a Bird. But right now that little rat shak P.O.J. works well for what I use it for, and If it does break it was given to me so I'm not out any money. |

again, to you Sg569. spending $500+ on a bird isn't neccessary, unless you do a lot of precision work. a diamond SX100, or mfj equal, autek, a few others are MORE then sufficient at less then 1/4 the price. as long as scales are near what you need to read & you use the right scale & DON'T take too much into #'s as they get higher, everything'll be fine! |
