Hey there, I saw your old post re the 706 filter question. I was going to post same question as well! Did you get the 2.8 filter, and if so was it worth installing? I am working in Hong Kong now, and those parts are alot cheaper here than in states. Hope all is well with you, I got myself a Buddipole antenna so will be going mountian portable soon, will post my dates and frequency when confirmed. Has anyone out there spoken to Hong Kong ever? Hear from you soon Cheers Andrew 739 - an aussie in Hong Kong now! |

Hey Sixties: I have the IC-706MKIIg and I also purchased the SSB filter. Makes a huge difference in the mobile cutting down the noise. I also have a 706 in the shack and DO NOT Run a SSB filter there. I don't have too many hams in the neighborhood so I don't need to squeeze out other signals. Now if I was in Japan or Hong Kong, I might just need one. The filters here run around 70 bucks. What bands do you hang out? We might get a sked going. |

Hey there Slugo!! Okay, cool I will pursue the filter. I just got a buddipole so i can hike up some of the look outs with battery pack and try some DX. I found that 15 and mostly 20 meters have been fairly workable. I have a 817 as well and have worked Siberia, Russia and Asia with less than 5 watts and a crappy MFJ window screwdriver antenna. Haven't heard much USA activity BUT I know it does come in as some of the big gun stations here are working them BUT I cannot hear them (due to 1st fllor apartment in lower central area, hence the "hiking" statement!). I am getting pretty much into QRP, which is cool, but I still enjoy a KW when it feels right, although all my amps are in either Australia or Vancouver!!. I tried running my 706 in car but my god level 8 noise all the time!! My export radios, ie mag 257, 2950 etc in same vehicles didn't pick anything up except a radio signal!! I even tried my old IC 728 in my Aussie van and it rocked, perfectly quiet, hook 706 up in same setup and noise magnet!! Arhhhhhhh..... Apparently the 706 likes to pick up EVERY noise source that's available to be picked up, have you noticed this when you compare radios and QRM levels?? What bands do you hang on and when does HK, Asia come into your part of world? mmmm... never did hear back from Ca346!! ha ha.. PS- It is really bloody hot here now, average 80-90 % humidy!! Just lovely! Cheers Andrew Vk2TXB CA511 |
