Ok I have a Galaxy 225 . I know no more than a 2 watt dead key is what I want. What is the maximum amount of swing watts I can safely put into it. My Connex is swingin to 40 watts, is that too much? If so will my connex drive a 4 pill amp enough at 40 watts swing? All and any replys I'm thankful for. |

If it's a dual final radio no problem,if a single still no problem only 2/3rds output on amp,but what do I know,I don't believe in any more than a 4 to 1 swing ratio and 16 watts swing will power a 4 pill nicely. |

hotwire, 40 watts swing for the galaxy is too much. get swing down to 12 or so, by backing down mic gain. texas star dx500 would be happy with 40 watts swing. most commercial made standard drive amps won't like 40 watts swing. customs, such as x/magna force, davemade, etc, most of their straight 2 x 2879 amps will be ok with about 35 watts swing, MAYBE 40. |

Thanks guys! Hey Patszerozero, I took your advice and turn down the mic gain. Sure enough it took the wattage down. Now its swings from a actual 1.5 watt DK to around 10 to 15 watts and let me tell you, the audio is so much cleaner and quieter in the back ground now. still slammin loud. Didnt lose any loudness at all and the gain is back almost halfway. I did get the max swing down to 30 watts now with the gain all the way up.I'm saving for a Texas Star now. With 1.5 watt dead key and a 30 watt swing what Texas Star amp with SSB delay does everyone think would best suit the Connex? Not trying to lock down the town I just want a good strong signal. BTW, I have a 55 amp power supply that I run my amps on. The Texas Star cant go much past a 45 or 50 amp drawl so the power supply gives me more years of operation. Those suckers are'nt cheap ya know! |

Hotwire: 55 amps is a lot. My KL-400 drew around 25 amps peak, on the meter, and I could hear the Power Supply fans slow down. It was a 25 constant -30 surge supply. A 50 amp supply would have been fine.

good work hotwire! things don't have to be cranked wide open to make the difference!!! the higher the swing, the higher the output from the amp, therefore higher amperage draw. the texas star dx500 will handle the 30-40 watt swing, but probably draw 65-75 amps on high for about 500 watts TOPS output, maybe as low as 400 watts. you could keep it on low or just turn the mic gain back up til you get about 40 amps draw on the supply. so as you've found out, backing down the SWING as well as the mic gain can help things greatly! |
