First off, let me say, Lon THANKS FOR POSTING THE S9 VR ADJUSTMENTS!!! But your S9 mod instructions are clearly for another radio! Second, There seems to be some confusion here on just how the S9 is modded, hopefully I can clear this up With the top of the radio off and the front facing you there is a board mounted on the left side with a pcbx-0335r3a chip installed. On this board there are 4 jumpers (#4 being the closest to the chip) JP1 ON=export mode / OFF=10 meter mode JP2 ON=program mode / OFF=locked (we'll talk about this later) JP3 ON=selectable 10 or 5 kHz steps / OFF= normal operation JP4 ON=6 digit freq counter / OFF=5 digit First thing first, there are 6 digits on that counter, lets use 'em! JUMP JP4! Now let’s get this thing in export mode! Easy! Just put a jumper in JP1. Here comes the cool part! You can program any of 11 bands in to the 8 bands that the 8 position band switch allows any where from 25.615-30.555! Here's how. Put the radios band selector in position A, with a jumper wire, jump the pins of JP2 and JP4 (JP1 and JP3 OFF). Notice the channel display now shows a letter A-L. Now jump the pins of JP1 and you will notice the channel display jumps up one letter, so if it was A now it will say B, and so on. Do this 'till you find the band that you want to be band A on the switch, when you have found it stop and move on to the band B on the switch and follow the same procedure until you get to the band you want for B, and so on. lets say you want band L to be A on the switch and band A to be B on the switch you would scroll thru the letters on the display 'till you get to L (with the band selector on A) and stop, switch the selector to B and short JP1 'till you get to A, stop and move on, etc. I programmed mine to cover well below CB, CB and all of 10 meters, here’s how: Band A (on the switch) is programmed as band B Band B (on the switch) is programmed as band C Band C (on the switch) is programmed as band D Band D (on the switch) is programmed as band E Band E (on the switch) is programmed as band F Band F (on the switch) is programmed as band G Band G (on the switch) is programmed as band H Band H (on the switch) is programmed as band I That means that my radio now covers 26.065-29.665 and if you factor in the 10 KHZ jump switch (for the “A” channels) and the “slider” it WILL cover every single frequency possible within that range! Last but no least! This radio is also capable of covering 26.000-32.990 in 5 or 10 KHZ steps to do this you would want JP1 and JP3 ON and (JP2 and JP4 OFF)! The 10KHZ switch on the front panel of the radio will now control your increments. In the off position it's 5 KHZ steps, in the on position it is 10KHZ steps. In this mode the channel display does no light up (why should it really) The 6 digit display is all you need. An channel display would be stupid. NOTE: The radio will probably need to be re-tuned if you plan on running above 29.990, the power seems to drop off pretty rapidly after that with out tuning the radio. NOTE: Make sure you are careful removing the metal cover over the “channel board” and make sure you replace it too!!! PRETTY COOL HUH?! Any way, I hope this clears things up BC

I just opened mine up, and mine is accessed with the BOTTOM of the radio off, front facing you. I can not get the 6 digit display to work when jumping pin 4. I have 6 digits in SSB mode only. 5 digits on everything else. My other S-9 has 6 all the time, and is jumped the same way. Any suggestions? |

Dale, Sorry, but I cannot answer that as I only post the Information that I receive direct from Sam Lewis. If it says it is for Mic Gain then that is to adjust your Mic Gain on the radio. But we are VERY LUCKY as the information that I have listed in the Copper Modification list for the S-9 is not avialiable anywhere else on the Internet. I also have all of the Information on the Magnum S-6 and it will be included in the Review on the Magnum S-6 when I am finished and also posted in the Modification List. Hope this helps, Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN

I apologize, you do need to open the bottom of the radio, not the top, sorry. Also the whole "6 digit thing" has been a bit of a pain for some people and I don't know why. BC |

Thanks Lon!!! The info on the VR's was dead on I was able to do a "half way" allignment! I put the "center frequency" actually ON the center slot on the clarifier! I adjusted the freq counter a bit (very slight) so it was truly, perfectly CORRECT! I turned the modulation VR up to 100%!!! (wasn't far off, believe me, not at all)! I played with the echo VR's so that the "endless echo" is actually ENDLESS, not that I will ever use it, but hey...! I adjusted the squelch to meet my wants I adjusted the TX meter to my wants and so on I made a few DX contacts with good reports! I made my first contact with Hot Wire (He's about 45 miles south of me I guess) for the first time! Got decent reports but there was a lot of kip rolling in and my little mobile wan't quite doing it on AM. Thanks again BC
