I would say 10-13 watts dead/key am/fm,25 to 40 watts ssb, this should still give you lots of swing room, now a 500 hd of any make with 2sc2879s you can cram 40 watts dead/key but make sure your swr is right down there or POOF, AND YOU ONLY GOT 40 WATTS OF SWING ROOM.I believe the variable pot restricts the amount of input for long pot life, and you could use a 93t to drive either, what difference does it make if the 2sc2290 is built in(667v) or in radio (93t) and a 500v is a 667v without the 2sc2290 driver.Bigbob |

Being a Texas star amp, I would say no more than 4 to 5 watts max, to maintain the 1:4 or 1:3 swing ratio. Thats only because the texas star uses 1" transformers, with no fan to cool the amp. Now an X-Force 4 pill 2879 class C amp can take a 10-12 watt dead key because that amp is a competition built amp, with a cooling fan and 2" transformers (less saturation). The Class B biased 4 pill 2879 amp will take a 6-7 watt dead key, has a cooling fan, and 2" transformers, and because it is B biased for ssb, it takes less drive to get the same results as the Class C biased X-force. Both amps are made by the same company. Bottom line, Texas star amps are mass produced, where as the other 2 amps mentioned are custom built for competition. Hope this helps. Wolverine. |

WELL I CAN TELL YOU THAT IT HAS 4 2879 PILLS AND I'M RUNNING MY VR-9000 TURNED ALL THE WAY UP IN THE CAR AND I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS. I RUN TWO COOLING FANS ON AND I DON'T HAVE ANY HEATING PROBLEMS. ALL MOST ALL MY USE IS ON SIDEBAND WITH VERY LITTLE AM USE. I'M ONLY ASKING BECAUSE I THINK MY 2517 PUTS OUT A LITTLE MORE THEN MY VR-9000. THANKS FOR ALL THE INPUT deliz2 |

texas star hasn't listed a dx 500 hd or hdv in years. only 500 & 500v's-both of which they rate at the same 4 watts carrier input. but yes, the 2879's are rated at 10 watts input each-pep, so there's your 40 watt input, & therefore in theory at least, it SHOULD be able to handle 10 watts dead key. but if you've got a magnum, you can key that 1-4 to be safe & still swing 40... |

I've had it swing shming,it's all a load, get a dampened meter movement or an led readout and you'll see your SWING.There are peaks that will beat the attack time of your limiter or alc,but they are worthless...all you need is 4 watts of modulation to fully modulate a 4 watt carrier, any more is overmodulation or distortion, what are we doing on the air anyway, trying to communicate CLEARLY,not blow everybodies speakers out with garble, you can't get something for nothing and you can't defy the laws of physics and eletromagnetism, but swing sounds like the last old wives tale that's going to be debunked,it's just a case of *****envy!Man! |

Stick a couple of fans on it and keep the volts down to 13.8 and let her rip! I drive my DX500 on SSb with an AR3500 putting out 65-70W PEP for 650W PEP out put no worries. The 40 watts AM PEPfrom the S-6 with the top gun on won't bother this amp at all. You will need heaps of Amps to keep up with her tho.... These are strong amps TEXAS STAR. Better than the DX1600 for staying together! |
