I haven't used one of those for over 15 years now, but, from what i remember there is an adjustment on the bottom which changes the tone. It may be set to bassy. Hopefully its not your mic element going bad. JIM/ PA/ CEF 375 |

Oh and also, i had trouble using a Turner +3 on my RCI 2995dx, it was to bassy and muffled. I tried 2 different +3's just wouldn't work for me. I use a DM-452 and Silver Salute mic on it. Good luck, hope you get it working good! JIM/ PA/ CEF 375 |

Was it working fine before and just started to sound muffled? If yes, what changed? Does another microphone sound fine on the radio? Have you tried a new battery? If you back off the gain does it clean up? Try turning the microphone gain on the radio to full and lower the gain of the microphone. The SSK has two output pots - the knob on top, and another you access with a screwdriver through a hole on the bottom of the microphone. You may need to drop the gain of the pot on the bottom. |

You might want to have someone take a look at it and check the output of the element on an audio amplifier. It's possible that the new cable wasn't wired properly and that's why the audio is rolled off and it sounds muffled. |

Did you locate the pot on the bottom of the mic??? Have you tried to adjust it? The Turner mics are good mics, but, like any other mic, if it doesn't match your radio or your voice it's not going to make you happy. I've tried Several Turner Mics on my RCI 2995dx, +2 and +3, just couldn't get the sound i wanted. But, i've used them on radios in the past with great results. D-104 have never worked on any radio i've ever had, but, they are a great mic for those that do sound good and use them. JIM/ PA/ CEF 375 |

It's not about what mic sounds good with what radio, it's about what mic sounds good with your voice. Wire up a mic that you know sounds good with your voice and use it with your 2990. It should sound just as good on that radio as any other. |

I thought I remembered reading a cool post about microphones a while ago. I did a search and found this: http://www.copperelectronics.com/discus4/messages/14/77285.html |

Grumpy: You might invest in a mic tester that test the audio and puts it through a speaker so that you can hear it. They cost around 35.00. |

I can put a Turner + 3 on a Uniden Washington, Madison, and some others and sound great. Some radios i sound awful with the EXACT same mic. Did my voice change? I think not! Did i use the mic correcly--YES! You mean no one ever had a mic sound good on one radio, but, not on another radio. Hummmmmmm

Grumpy, there is a guy I talk to a lot on the radio. He recently found a Turner sidekick at a garage sale for his RCI base. On AM he also sounds a bit muffled and the slight "tin can" sound. On SSB, that mic rocks the airwaves! Sounds incredible on SSB. I have no explaination except if you are into SSB, may try some radio checks there. Sometimes we have to mix and match. Alsworld |

Road Warrior - I'll bet the radios that sounded awful with the +3 had their limiters either badly adjusted or deactivated. I don't have any cut limiters, so I never have that problem. Back down the gain and I bet it suddenly sounds much better. I've got dozens of microphones and lots of radios. Every microphone sounds essentially the same from radio to radio. About the only difference is the low end responce which varies only slightly. Yes there are differences from radio to radio, but they are miniscule when compared to the differences in voice responce from microphone to microphone. The best explanation I've read is this: You have a radio on which you like how your voice sounds with a D104. Your friend comes over to visit and talks on the radio to your friends. But your friend is a woman and has a much higher pitched voice than you do. She sounds like a banshee on your D104 while you sound just fine. Where's the problem? The microphone's interaction with the radio? Or is it her voice's interaction with the microphone? You could swap out D104 after D104 and she still wouldn't sound good on that radio, while you sound fine. It's the interaction of her voice with the microphone. |

Grumpy,I know you're frustrated,to get that mike to work on am you may just have to breate on the modulation controls,so to speak,it has a compression circuit in it,on older cb's this helped their anemic modulation cicuits, most modern cb's and exports are already "balls to the wall" any additional compression just makes you muffled,on ssb though, there is no high-level modulation,so a compressor amp in the mike really kicks butt,I have both types and my buds really know the difference when I hook up my compression mike when I'm on ssb.Just somthing to think about.Oh and by the way my d-104 sounds like my stock mike except it is so sharp it gives you a headache listening to it on am,this is with my dx-2517.Bigbob |

I have a Turner SSK and it sounds the same way on my RCI 2990DX. On AM it has a muffled sound, but when I use it in SSB it sounds good. You might want to try a D104, that is what I have found to sound best for me. As Hollowpoint has stated, it is not always what mic sounds good with the radio it is how the mic sounds with your voice! |
