The lincoln is a solid radio but NOT CHEEP.
Dollar for Dollar the 257 is a best buy.

Not as good as most imports. Galaxy99 is not a bad radio though. I think too much effort was put into the extras it has and not the radio itself. I have talked lots of skip over the years and I have heard very few Galaxys. Mostly Saturns and for the first time a 959 down in Texas yesterday. Before I bought a 99V I would chose a Connex first and then others like Magnum, President, RCI,General,. Just solid radios that are not built too attract people for toys and extras but premium performance.

Hotwire ....
You hit the (radio) nail it on the head. As I have said many times many exports are iffy to poor radios if you want something good most only offer lots of ( Illeagal ) frequencies and "toys" but little as far as performance.
If you want a good radio look at what is REALY being sold to the HAMS ...... 2950's, lincolns, 257's ect..... but do you ever see a galaxy or connex in QST ? ..... I dont think so ....

Remember there is a saying in HAM radio ...

" If you can't hear them you can't work them"

And the better radios will have better receivers or at least if of older design a way to update by newer better parts a already stable receiver ..... such as the changing of the 2sc1674 RF stage to the much hoter 2sc2999.
Channel guards as sold by copper when added to the radio filtering such as can be done in the grant, lincoln and 2950 make a big improvement in removing splatter from near by stations .....
In fact if done right with a channel guard a lincoln or grant receiver selectiviy compaires nicely with a low end ham radio such as a ft-840 in SSB mode. Yes you can have a good EXPORT base if the one you pick is already of solid design.

HEY NOW! My Connex 4800 can work with the best of them. Maybe not like a decked out Lincoln or a modded out Grant or 2950 but hey I mostly 99% of the time make that CQ contact with it.Even over seas with it a few. The only thing I can say is wrong with my 4800 is having echo and talkback. Not really needed but I will always defend it being a premium sidebander. Most of the time I work DX in my mobile on a 148 NWST with a small amp. Its been modded to the max. I'm very proud of it and always get unsolicited comments and tons of flowers. I will say that I took a 200 dollar radio and made it into 400 or 500 dollar radio. Never again will I do such a thing.I had a little money come up and I splurged. If I could do it all over I would have bought a lincoln or similar radio that is a premium set out of box. But you are correct. Want to find out witch radios are top dog? Listen to the DX for a while and take notes. Talley up the radios and I bet There will be more Unidens Grants Presidents Lincolns Rci ect ect. Oh I must add! I do hear lots and lots of Cobra 2000 GTLs. 73s sir

My Galaxy don't talk to good on ssb, but it workes great on am. My ranger works very well on ssb and am. I would go with the ranger.

I did take notes on the radios that were being heard on DX and my radio of choice was and still is my Uniden Grant XL. I get all kinds of great reports without asking, and the best reports are I'm very loud and some times the only station coming out of the pile up. That's the Grant XL with a Silver Eagle Stand and the 10-DA sideband head, the antenna is a PDL-ll true quad beam.

My Lincoln will walk circles around the 99v on SSB.On AM the 99v was louder, the rx was ok, but not as quiet as my Lincoln.
The Mag 257 is a solid performer. For the money, it can't be beat.

If you want a ssb radio go with a Lincoln. If you want screaming loud Am audio. Go with a Magnum.

I have had both galaxy and the Magnum 257.

<y Magnum is hands down a better radio, especially on SSB. Very stable. Galaxy are famous for being drifters on SSB.

all the arguing on this forum of galaxy vs anything & this thread seems to be leaning AWAY from galaxy. more people are seeing the light!
even hotwire is seeing that his $300 connex might not be as good as a $150 cobra! yeah! for the casual user, as well as my needs, my grant xl gets much more airtime then my S9, but at the time i had the $$ to splurge on the S9 & do NOT regret that purchase! everything has it's place-except galaxy!-in my radio world! icom for the base, grant xl for the mobile, rci5054dx100 for 6 meters, S9, delta force, ar3500, ft101e & all the rest are just toys for when the mood hits. the only galaxy's in my shack are for PARTS!!!

I have a Magnum Omega Force, a Galaxy 95T, and couple of other radios. The 95T is by far the best performing Export Radio I've ever owned. Yes the Galaxy drifts a little until it's warm, but it's no big deal to me. The internal speaker is tiny too. Other than that, it blows all my other radios away.

I'm with Pat Double Nothing, My Grant XL speaks very well for it's self on 27.385.0 MHz. LSB, the sideband Superbowl. Listen for 962 South Central Oklahoma. I didn't spare the horses when it came to building a good DX station. And I don't run a lot of power, just audio. Using a lot of power takes away all the enjoyment of great DXing.

It just depends what you are after guys. Am?? NOTHING will be louder out of the box than a Magnum S-9. NOTHING!!! SSB In my opinion the Lincoln wins that catagory hands down. Best combo of the 2? Probably the S-9 right now. Good Am TX good SSB TX and the RX isnt bad either. They can hear with the best of them.

You know I finally have realized that my 148 is a better radio than my 4800. 148 out of box no but after my tune ups and mods it will step all over my connex. 4800 will drive the heck out of an amp and is killer loud but as far as far as having a good strong rich sound on transmit its 148 hands down. The reciece is far better too. I can hear a pin drop in lsb during a lightning storm driving on the highway with all the fans wipers and things going full speed. Its not all about the accesories, watts, channels, $$$$ spent, Its about the qaulity built radios such as Grants 148s Lincolns and the people in the know how know how to make them sing. Hey I wont knock a Galaxy. Always #1 on the big road. Never hear them in DX land. I just feel they are overpriced, overrated, made to big a deal about and really steered towards the over the road truck driver and not hams or freebander cbers. Same with connex and alot of others, they are pretty much a semi truck radio. I think my next brand new radio will be a President Lincoln or maybe a 257.

You'll notice I say LSB whenever I post something. I have been the route with export radios and didn't really care for them. On AM loud is not the whole picture, many's the time I've tried channel 13 and it's been dead both AM and LSB and the rest of the band has been going great guns. Most times about all I hear on chnl. 13 are the local rock haulers with the most foul mouths you've ever heard, these guys on chnl. 13 make the guys on chnl. 19 sound like church going respectible citizens.

That Connex 4800 is the same radio as the 148gtl DX. A good tune up and alignment and it will SCREAM. Very good radio for the money

Oh yeah I know. Its had a killer tune up and alignment. Just had to put the astatic noise cancel mic back on. With a regular mic like the cobra 73 it was over driving my amp and I had to have the gain almost all the way down. Its a cobra xl 350 amp. Little amp but nice 2 piller. I could hear my voice or something coming from the amp itself. So back to the astatic with gain that can go all the way up if wanted. Amp is happy and my audio with the astatic mic is just as loud but is very crystal clean no distortion like I had just a little with the ca73 and wilson mic. So until I get a desk mic ( note, 4800 is my base set)I'm sticking with the astatic. I know guys say dont use a noise cancel mic on a base but I love it and sound great and is loud and proud with my Imax. My Cobra 148 is just my favorite and it has giving me 3 years now of good DX fun. 2 years of it was only 20 watss barefoot and I worked the country and canada. The ears on the cobra are great. Never use the sound tracker. I get almost no white noise or static at all. I wish somebody can mod my 4800 to get rid of some of its white noise and narrow things up a bit so it recieves like my 148. You kinda get spoiled when you have such a good reciever and go to something else different. I hate starting over again with a new radio. But I do have a brand new back up 148 that has had all the same work done to it. Something this good I had to have 2 of them. Its waiting for the day to come out of the box to play. Maybe when my current 148 gets to old and retires. Oh and I do have a Grant in my future. Its on its way to town shortly.

HOWEVER, the 148gtl is NOT the same as the legal 148/grant xl. the 'legal' still has the better rcv & for 1/2 the price,...
