Why dont most cb amps have a tuned input? My friend has a 150 watt mobile amp that when in use it shows a very high swr, when off it is back to normal swr.Seems to me that a proper tuned input would clear this up.Do the makers of most cb amps leave this out as a cost saving measure?

Forget cb for the moment,if the antenna has an insufficient ground plane,it will exhibit this,if the antenna is not rated for this much wattage, same thing, plus you have to readjust the swr meter for the increased power, more watts means more volts and a higher reading if you do not reset the meter.Bigbob P.S.you know I really get miffed when somebody asks a straight forward question, clouded in ignorance and right away everyone jumps on his soapbox and denounces it,answer his question then get behind your podium,man.Bigbob,again.

Hi guys tnx for the answers.Well to set the record straight 1, the antenna is a A99, 2,swr meter has been set,3 i have a SB200 amp that i use on 10 meters with an A 99 about 600 wtts, but my swr does not change much at all with the SB200 on.I checked in side this little we will call it a 10 meter mobile amp and i see not sign of a tuned input anywhere.I have seen this happen before with these (10 meter amps)when turned on it causes the swr to go very high as a result of not having a properly tuned input circut. My original question was why do the people who produce these (10 meter amps) negilect to install a tuned input!?

To answer Crackerjack's question, 3 foot jumpers or if need be 6 foot and all coax to the antennas at multipals of nine foot works quite well. Tuned lengths of coax is the answer. All my coax lengths are measured. And with the beam and IMAX-2000 I run 1.1 to 1.3 SWR, regardless of what the frequency is.

Yankee:

Thanks, I was asking Captain Radio what he was using.

I use 9' multiples and it has worked wonders for me.

Thanks.

How much coax? Enough to reach from the antenna to the radio , thats what i always use.A man once asked Lincon how long should a mans legs be?he repilied long enough to reach the ground. So coax as much as required to go from ant to radio. The question still stands why dont they put a tuned input in the amps like they do with ham amps Tnx guys Bob CEF 451

Captian_radio,

Since I am not an amplifier manufacturer or none of the forum members are that I know of, I could not even venture a guess.

Maybe you could contact a few Amp Manufacturer's and get thier answers and let everyone on the forum know the answer.

My boomer 400 and my golden eagle 150 and my shooting star and palomars and grey 50+ do,but my hooker 100 does not and it sits in the closet collecting dust. Most I have seen have an L-pad and matching transformers to tune the input to the pills, you're dropping from 50 ohm imp. to about 3 ohms,I would say there is somthing terribly wrong inside as I run various length jumpers and have an swr of 1.23 and my antenna has an swr at it's input of 1.3.Bigbob
