sometimes it is recomended to cut a resistor to increase modulation.why couldnt the resistor be removed and replaced with a adjustable pot.that way you could regulate the modulation and prevent over modulation. what size pot. would i need skilletlicker

What size resister are you cutting? Usually, actually it is a diode you are cutting.... Right? |

Actually, a smart thing to do is cut the whatever, and use a power mic -you can adjust the modulation from the back of the mic, get maximum clear modulation and not have to solder anything to the radio. When I do the xl-510's for our missionary vehicles, I install a D-104 handheld. This works real well for us. Put the battry on a maintenance schedule. |

The smart thing to do is leave the mod limiter intact. You should NEVER cut the limiter. It is there for a reason. You cut it and run a power mic on them?? Talk about a splatter box |

Yeah, most of the dx type radios can have the trimmer turned to overmodulation without cutting the resistor, all cutting the resistor does is disable the amc and alc and you get a muddier audio on ssb when not driven to distortion, better to bridge the trimmer control with a pot and leave the resistor alone.Bigbob |

Iluvrf : The point of a good power mic, is that you can turn the power down, as well as up. I am not a redneck who turns everything up to max. Some radios, like Uniden have limiters that limit the modulation, no matter what you put into them -they are always under modulated due to the limiting zener diode. Cut that diode and you can use a power mic to feed any level of power to the circuit -from no audio to splatter. But you can control it.

Hey I turn everything up to maximum! My power mic goes up to 11.Keep my coffee cup warm atop my amp! Maybe thats why the locals around here dispise me......Oh yeah! I do leave my limiters be.I would never hack & chop my beloved radios. Loud and clear always. 0 garble, 0 static who wants to modulate? |

Anymore i just leave the modulation limiter intact in my radios. Years ago i had them cut out of alot of my radios. Loud they were...LOL... Let us know how that pot idea of yours works out Skilletlicker. JIM/ PA/ CEF 375 |

Skilletlicker - That's a common mod on the newer Washington because they don't come with an adjustable pot. Depending on the radio you're thinking about modifying there might be documentation on the web about what value to change the resistor. |
