I want to upgrade, and buy my 1st export radio. Is the General Lee, besides having more features than other radios, superior to the Uniden 78 and the Uniden elite series of radios when it comes to loud, screaming, AM audio??. I hear that there is no louder AM talker,(CB or export) bar none, than the general lee. Thanks in advance. Wolverine. |

If you want the loudest export on AM you have one choice. MAGNUM S-9. Bar none it is the LOUDEST export available. Magnum S-6 would be my next choice and then the General Lee. |

Are you deaf, or are you talking about signal to noise ratio, wide audio response, and a good clean receiver? A better speaker and audio amp? those are all things that can be measured and evaluated from the radio specs. I think that the Magnum has all that, and SSB. I have my Magnum hooked to an good external speaker, it makes it "Forward Facing" which (to me) makes a huge difference. Now -as for the Generals, I like them too, but most opinions of them are not objective 0r they have an almost cult following, Kind of like my opinion of the Magnum.I have always liked the OLD Unidens. Anything Uniden New, is suspect in my book.

Crackerjack, he is talking about the output audio. Not the incoming audio. Unidens can be tuned(new and old) to have loud audio but if you want the absolute loudest audio available on the market right now, go MAGNUM |

Say what you will, but after the audio mods and a Silver Eagle were added to my Uniden Grant XL, they all ask which Galaxy or Magnum radio I'm running on my base station, Uniden still speaks for it's self, the older models that is. Loud and proud in Central Oklahoma. |

And you are right Yankee. A uniden with mods can be louder than a stock Galaxy or Magnum. Tune up the Magnum or Galaxy? Night, night Uniden. Apples to oranges! Everyone cuts the newer model unidens down also and they will still run with the older models IF the right person tunes them. The Elite series are superb radios right now |

How about speaking into a megaphone while transmitting. I think that would make the audio on ANY radio louder. Couldn't resist. |

Apples for oranges it is. I'm not considering AM only radios one bit in my post. We do understand that the Uniden Grant LT was the last sideband radio for Uniden. Even if Uniden does come out with a new sideband radio in the future it will not be made in the Phillippines any more. Even Uniden like Cobra has gone to having thier radios made in countries other than the Phillippines. No it's not night night Uniden, my Grant XL still holds it's own against peaked and tuned radios from other manufacturers. |

Amen, right back Bruce, the Grant XL,LT. Cobra 148, 148F and 2000 GTLs. Are some of the finest radios ever made by any company, and this takes in the more expensive export radios. |

I believe Connex is one of the loudest. My 4800 has made others mad when I talked and startled them, claiming I almost blew up their speakers. Sure Galaxys are loud but I have heard a lot of connexes walk all over Galaxys. Buy a Connex and you will be happy you did. |

I give up, (I'm not talking about AM radios). Good clean undistorted high quality crystal clear audio is what I'm speaking of. |

Yankee ..... AM is a dieing mode like CW except for aircraft and CB and a few diehards on 10 meters no one uses it. It DOES a FINE job on AM and i dont see any reason to need better ...... My grant is as good as it gets on SSB ..... as good as most HAM radios. Now as for AM ....... who cares .... if its THE BEST! |

Apples and oranges, Let's get on to the next thread. I think we went deep enough into this one for the time being. |

Thanks all, for your opinions. I've narrowed my choices to either a Connex 3300HP, or 1 of the galaxies (Without the pills), since I already own a few amps. Wolverine. |

AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! sorry. i was away last week yankee. but feel i need to add my 2 cents anyway! wolverine, check out the keydowns. the 'big boys' use mainly 2 radios at keydowns, & more often then not, they are AM only. 1st choice is cobra 29/uniden 76/uniden 78. the few SSB radios are 148/grant xl's. export radios have the reputation for having horrible audio, that's the reason they use real cb's. sure, a galaxy may SOUND louder, & yes, i've even heard an occasional one sound good, but they are too easy to be made to sound like $&%#. i personally would NEVER buy an AM only radio, even though i spend most of my time AM in the mobile, & 3/4 of my time AM in the base. i also think, that no matter how loud the transmit is, receive is equally, if not more important. if getting out is a problem, i could always get a bigger amp. but if i get a headache listening to noise when then band is quiet, then that radio is bye-bye. that is my feeling/opinion of most every galaxy i've ever had the displeasure of using. wouldn't consider 1 no matter how loud. i know it's double the cost of a 3300HP, but an S9 would be my choice. a texas ranger 296, though not an export, is another excellent sounding radio, transmit & receive. an omega force would be another great choice. if AM is all you want, i'd check the features of the S3 vs S6 magnum & see which serves your purpose more. you'll get a receiver that simply blows away galaxy, & transmit equipped with a compressor & clean, loud audio-without having to hack it up to get it. hopefully i won't fall as i climb down from my soapbox. thankyou. |

Thanks for the reply Patzerozero. I'll look into the S- series radios, and do some comparisons. Wolverine. |

This question again? ANY radio with a properly adjusted limiter will be nice and loud if you use a speech processor. |

"Thanks all, for your opinions. I've narrowed my choices to either a Connex 3300HP, or 1 of the galaxies (Without the pills), since I already own a few amps." Wolverine. Just for the record, they are NOT Pills, they are transistors, and every radio has 'em.

Wolverine.....The Cobra 148 GTL and Uniden Grant XLs scream when modded properly. I have compared most of the Exports and have never found an Export louder than a 148 or Grant. Now I am talking about the 148/Grants made before 1998. |

Sparkomatic, you are right. But.... the General Lee export comes awfully close. I'm waiting for the new Stryker 10 meter AM radio to come out sometime this month. I hear that it's supposed to be as good, or surpass the loudness of the Uniden audio boards. We'll see. I can't wait to read the reviews on this radio that's not a clone of any other. I saw an advertised price for the radio on another forum which lists for $219.00. But keep your Grants for sure Sparkomatic. Wolverine. |
