Is there any technical problem running a 1 pill amp vs a 2 poll amp, other than the ultimate power question? Will a ome pill running in designed specs, run as clean as a 2 pill amp? Forget the power, I am talking about the fidelity of the signal. For example, would a KL-200 run as ckean as a kl-300? |

Crackerjack, YES Radios are very dumb and they just cannot tell how many pills an amplifier has or even if it has no pills and only tubes. If you radio is set up correctly NO ONE on the other end can tell if you are running a KL40-KL60-KL200-KL300 or KL500 of KLV1000 or running 100% Stock Radio with No Amp in line except for the signal strength. Or at least so far I have never been able to find anyone who can do it. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |

I am looking at the kl-200 mainly because the DC requuirement is only 14A max, and I really think that 175W is sufficient for a little extra punch. |

I prefer 2 pill amps myself, as well as 4 pills. The only problem I see with 3 pills, is that the driver section is most prone to fail, only because a lot of people don't know that 1 1/2 to 2 watts from the radio is all that is needed, and anything more than that "Poof", there goes the driver stage. Another thing, is that 3 pills generate a whole lot more heat than 2 pill amps, especially if the casing and internal heat sink is small, making things kind of crowded in the case, if you get my drift. Just my thoghts, hope this helps. Wolverine. |

One other thing, 3 pill amps, depending the drive and swing from the radio, will produce anywhere from 450 to 550 watts pep, maybe a little more if it is a competition amp. If you don't mind the heat issues, and want the watts, then go for it. Otherwise, 2 pills cool better and last longer, IMHO. Wolverine. |

My 1 pill works fine...don't expect 175 watts AM out of KL203 or KL200P though...they will max on AM around 100 watts in most cases. On SSB around 150. Although mine has swung slightly higher at times. Best thing to do with a 1 pill though is to put install fan on top. It really will extend the life of the Amp. I just wired mine on top of the KL200P directly to the power switch inside so if I turn on the amp the fan goes on. Just used a computer fan. |

Brewdirect: 100W is what the AM power of the kl-200 is advertised for. That and 175W SSB is probably more than I need. Good idea on the fan. I installed a wall mounted fan that blows down on the desk, directed directly at where the amp sets. It helps cool the who;e area. |

To experience the same differnce in recieved audio from a station switching from 4 watts to 100,that same station would have to switch to 1200 watts, like my friend says the first 100 watts makes the biggest difference, that's why I went for the boomer 400 4-pill,the next step up from a one pill that makes any real diff.Bigbob |

You are right Bob. When I was a Navy Radioman, we would commonly have 5KW available and commonly use 100W on a SSB voice signal. Either it propogates or it doesn't. The real advantage is in how clean the modulation is. You are better off spending money for a better microphone (If you need one). |

I have the Kl 200 Amp and my uncle has the KL 400 and KL 500, all sound very clean on transmit. As long as your running the proper wattage coming out of your radio. JIM/ PA/ CEF 375 |
