I have a 959. If you just want a good regular radio you will be ok. I like the am recieve very much, nice and quite low noise. Noww ssb is a different story. Remember the 949 and 959 are not like the 10 meter rigs at all, such as the DX99V. They are just a standard radio but are very easy to do the channel mod. |

in galaxy's defense, carls86fiero, like hotwire said, 'If you just want a good regular radio you will be ok'-correct. BUT, if you want superior receive & transmit, in my, yankee & bc's opinion, & others, galaxy is NOT the best. |

Galaxy makes a fine CB rig. it will serve its purpose and is probably the BEST sounding real AM CB out there. SSB isnt too bad either. My 99V runs hand and hand with my S-9.(both exports) |

BUT, iluvrf, carls86fiero was looking at a REAL cb, which the 949 is-the 99v is NOT. that said, & i understand $320 for the S9 may be more then carls86fiero wants to spend for a radio, the ONLY other choice in my opinion would be a texas ranger 296-NOT the 696fd1, but the xl/148 clone 296. i've done up a half dozen of 'em in recent months. the receive is awesome, & i've gotten variable 1-6 watts key & 12+ rms swing, 20 pep not bad for the basic mods. they definitely give the xl/148 a run for the $$! |

When I opened up my 959 to do the channel mod I was shocked. Compared to my 4800 or 148 the 959 is a barren wasteland inside. One hollow radio. I bet it could be down sized to a Uni Pro. I dont know about you guys but I like my radios to have lots of guts inside.Makes me feel like I have something going on in there. I do agree with pats00, yankee and bc. A lot better radios out there for the money. Oh yeah!! Hey Bc!! Congrats on the baby boy!! Lucky man. |

Ive owned alot of radios, and have been very satisfied with my Galaxy 959, ON AM. SSB is a little lacking in performance, but on AM, you can't beat the audio and drive that little radio does. I followed all the mods listed on this site and added the Viagra B board and have an excellent mobile rig in my truck w/ my 959. (and maybe I got lucky, lol) |

well the good thing is that i do run a magnum 257 in the car. i just got the 949 for my ex-girlfreinds car (i need my head checked for doing this) because she depends to much on her cell. the cell is great in-town but its always nice to have a back-up. between towns there are a lot of places the cell doesn't work. |

I think the 99v is just about the bells and whistles. To attract buyers for that and not really knowing how well of a performer it is. If I was to buy a Galaxy 10 meter I would go 88. |

I think you are right Hotwire, it might just be about the bell and whistles, but they do sound good. |

How is there a difference between the 949/959 and the 696FD1?They use the same board.I've owned the 949 and still own the 696FD1 and the only thing that makes the 696FD1 better is the freq. counter and I will say it is an excellent C.B. radio AM & SSB.I also have the old Cobra 148,I'm told the 296 is the same, and it does hear a little better on SSB but other than that they are both good 40 channel C.B. radios. Inside , the 959 & tr696 fd1 are the same . I have the 696 & 296 . both are real good radios . The 296 has much quiter receive . In my opinion it is very close to the GRANTS or OLDER 148 |

You are right to an extent Mike. The boards are the same but the 959 and 949 have extra features added to them. I agree that the 696 is a better radio it is just not as loud as the Galaxy on AM. SSB quality on the 696 seems better to me |

the 696fd1 & 959 are the same. the 296 is the same as the 148/xl/lt. ALL 148/xl/lt mods work on the 296, some part #'s & values & descriptions are different-but everything's the same. the 296 is the better of the currently available radios. for the casual user, the others are fine too, but my preference would be the 296 & it's xmit & rcv advantages. |
