What products are commercially available to coat/treat aluminum AND nylon antenna parts? What about water/moisture proofing coax joints? |

crackerjack, If you a electracal supply house get a roll of 3m High voltage rubber tape about 2" wide I call it death tape its so strong you can put a quater between and fold it over and on its self and nobody can pull the tape apart. I use this on water proofing coax.

For Coax Joints (outside connections to antennas), I use Coax Boots and/or UV rated Silicone. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |

Lon: Where do you get the coax boots? I am using tape now, but the prob;em with tape and sun well,.... And besides when moisture gets inside black tape, it stays inside the tape and becomes steam. |

I have always been taught never to seal coax connections with anything that may trap moisture, such as tape or any type of sealer. Now a boot seems very logical knowing it can breathe and water can run out from it. I always save the boots from old coax and you can also find makeshift boots at auto and hardware stores. |

I always use glazing tape,1/2"x1/16" black butyl tape,VERY STICKY,and completely water proof, run it beyond the connectors at least 2",you can tape it if you like and the electrical tape WONT come off, rubber tape is unvulcanized rubber it sticks to itself very well but to other surfaces with varying results,it insulates well but unless you can encapsulate the object it will leak moisture, try 3M butyl tape it's the best water proofer even better than silicone sealant.Bigbob |
