I've been looking at the Realistic DX-302. Read some really good reviews on this radio. Also the Yaesu's and Panasonics look pretty nice, but a tad pricey for me right now. I DO NOT like digital meters, I need an actual needle for my tastes! And a freq counter. Any opinions/advice on this topic? What shortwave radios have you guys had good/bad luck with? Thanks. |

Timebomb, the dx-302 is a good choice for a beginner set.also the dx100and 200.they can all be had pretty easy.I have heard the dx-300 had a lot of bugs that wernt worked out till the 302 was released.moving up a step or 2 you might watch for a sweet deal on a dx-394 or one of the panasonic portables like the rf2600 or 2800.I currently use a dx-394 with no mods yet and its biggest fault is suffering front end overload from strong signals. tech291 CEF#291 kc8zpj |

Well, finally won a DX-302 on "the" auction site. Haven't got it yet, but will give a short review once I receive it. Thanks for the tips Tech291. |

Tech 291, I'll agree with you on the 394's front-end overload problems. I've owned a dx-390 for about 9 years now, the 394's little brother without the tape recorder. The radio certainly was a huge step up for me over the old Heathkit HR-10B. I use the radio on a day to day basis and take it with me on fishing trips. It does a bang up job with just the stock telescoping antenna. If you get around to doing the mods, let me know how the rig performs. I'm interested in this. Until then, I'll just continue to decrease the rf gain for those strong signals. Thanks again. |

Changing to the Kiwa filters in the DX-394 makes a HUGE difference. Although it does not exactly cure the front end overload problem, it makes the radio much more useable. The ONLY SW radio I have ever used that is immune to overload is the R390A. |

I think it depends on what kind of overload you're talking about Tech833. I think an R390A would overload my back! |

Timebomb - how do you like the DX-302? I've been thinking about getting a dedicated SW receiver and it sounds like this is a pretty good performer for the price. I also like that it's a good AM BCB receiver as I listen to a fair amount of AM radio. |

I love my DX-302. I haven't had it very long, but I'm good at using it already. Nice sw radio.

If you ever sell that 302, you will regret it. I speak from experience... |
