Just a quick heads up on Grant XL faceplates. You've probably all seen those cool faceplate designs on internet auction sites but probably never saw one for your Grant XL. Well I wanted one REAL bad to replace the badly worn original on mine. I emailed one guy who makes them and inquired. He told me (as I assumed) that the Cobra148 is very close and should work with a little trim around the holes and corners. Since I had already peeled off my faceplate and polished the chrome (real sweet look BTW!) I offered to send him my old one as a template so he could make them correct! He was thrilled to have the offer and told me he'd send my original back as soon as my new Rebel Flag plate was done. As soon as I get it and install it I'll post a pic along with his website. Thanks for your time~ I gotta get back to my tent by the mailbox~ 3zzz. Hank "905" LI New York CEF 559 |

On the other side of the coin, if a Grant XL is in a collection and not all hacked up or use worn, it looks best as it came from the box, also worth a lot more money. |

Keith: With the exception of the rounded corners of the Grant XL, it's going to look the same as the decals for the Cobra 148-GTL, as all the holes are the same on the Grant XL and the 148-GTL. Also someplace on the Grant XL owners website which is no longer there, I remember seeing the decals for the Grant XL.

Just out of curiosity, do you remember how much they wanted for it? Thanks. Keith |

A new-in-the-box Grant XL went for 120.00 + shipping on an internet auction site recently. That was the buy-it-now price. |

Yea, I talked to the seller. He had no idea what he had and really didn't care. I would have sucked it up -had I the price. I saw another go for almost $170.00 around the same time. Both were good prices, I guess. |

Also, last Fall, one sold at a local truck stop close ny out of old stock. It was marked 149.00, if memory strickes me correctly. It was whatever Copper last sold them for. I remember that Keith in Atlanta (off this forum) and I discussed getting it, for him and were too late. Anyay, they still exist, and are still fairly easily found. |

I'm not sure which retailer it was, as I am the third owner of my Grant XL. But the first owner a close friend who passed between Christmas and New Years bought three on close out at $109.95. Two of them are still in his wife's hands as well as a like new Cobra 148-GTL, one of the Grant XLs has never been on the air, but is all modified and set up with a frequency counter. And when the time comes, I have spoke for the new Grant XL as well as the Cobra 148-GTL, sorry but after I receive them they will not be for sale at any price, as they belonged to my buddy. They will be set up as A rememberance of my very close friend along with the rest of my vast 11 meter radio collection. The third one which is set up as a base station, his wife is keeping for her own use. |

Yankee, your absolutly right and I prefer the stocker look myself but this one had a VERY worn face plate and had a little "work" done before I got it. DK 7 swing 15. Everything inside is clean and just wanted a faceplate to freshen it up. If a stocker were available I'd have bought it...I looked. The rebel flag was always a favorite of mine and can always be taken off in the future. I did ask for my old one back when he was done with it...just to have. He get $10 plus $2 shipping for them. I'll be happy to report on the quality and fit when I get it in. Hank ~905~ CEF 559 LI New York |

Hank: Would you believe I'm the third owner of my XL and I was the one to take the plastic covering off the faceplate, as close as I can figure the three that my buddy bought is like maybe four or five years ago and I've had mine over two years now. So you can guess that mine still looks new out of the box. But, on the other side of the coin my Realistic TRC-449 made in 1979 also looks new. Every now and then you can get lucky and get a like new radio off that internet auction. But, buyer beware ask questions of the seller. |

Revisiting this thread..promised I'd post a pic of that Grant faceplate when It came in..here it is...not bad quality for $10. To be honest it looked good but didn't like itas much as I thought I would. Ended up buying an NOS chrome front end and NOS faceplate on ebay for $20. Should look new again soon! Faceplate still has plastic cover on it...yummy! Anyway here's the faceplate..enjoy Hank '905
