My 142 works really well but the speaker tone is very low, as in bass sound. Is there any way to better the tone? It does not have a tone switch. I have tried two other speakers with no luck. My other question is this, my signal meter swings backwards when people talk. For example if you have a 9, or better on the meter, it will go backwards at least 2 to 3 s-units. If you turn the rf gain way down then they start to swing forward. The tone problem is the most important to me first. Thanks a bunch! |

this is just a guess, but the receiver tuning coils might be out of alignment. if you dont have the proper test equip. setup though, you wont know if you're making a real improvement. its tough these days to decide if you want to experiment with a radio. those 142's are hard to come by. i think your cheapest route is to have a tech do an alignment on the radio. matt |

thanks for the reply, I have the equipment and did a receive tune and no luck but thanks for the idea anyway never hurts to suggest. if only I had a tone switch. I hooked up a uniden grant which has a tone switch and with it on low tone it sounds just exactly like the 142. Never a switch when you need one. LOL. I have the pc 385 board and it is used in several other radios. One of the those radio's must have a tone switch and I would love to know where on the board it would be located. Again thanks NEXT!!! |

I know this is an old post, but the receive meter swings back on every 142gtl I have ever seen. I have one now that was NOS when I bought it and it has this characteristic as well. I have had 5 or 6 of them and they all did this.... |

The meter is not linear thats why when you turn down the gain it go the other way some meters just use a diode to generate a voltage off a detection diode .... On 6 since 66
