I have a Cobra XL 350 2 pill amp. It is a 250 watt amp. Is it normal for this amp to need 40+ amps on sideband? It also gets super hot. The amp can be ice cold and when I key up and talk I can actually feel the rise in temp go up really fast. I have a 1.5 watt dead key on AM and a 40 watt swing. All works well. I'm just concerned about the heat. If I attach a fan should I not worry? BTW The radio is a connex 4800. |

Yes that's too much current, and it shouldn't get that hot that fast. I sometimes POUND a KL300P and it get's hot but not as fast as you describe. I would 'spect the "swing" is much too high. Is there a way to turn off the "modulator" and run normal? Sorry, not familiar with that radio. Chad |

Hotwire it sounds like your overdriving the amp. Have you checked how many watts it's keying, the dead keyup is what heats it up. That amp probably shouldn't be run with much over a 60 watt keyup, then swing to about 200 watts. |

No my dead key is 1.5 watts and a 40 watt swing. I'm going to buy a better meter this week. |
